After he finished high school he was offered a contract, with a profesional baseball team, but because they had lost their older son as a result of playing baseball they would not allow him to accept. Richard was a Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Lewisburg and a Sunday school teacher. Both Richard and Virginia helped to start the East Commerce Baptist Church and were charter members.
  From Jordan's Banks, a Lasater Family History, by Barbara Jo Preas, 610 7th Ave. N, Lewisburg, TN 37091, pg. 68 Richard Lee Lasater, Sr., age 84, died Wednesday evening at the Lewisurg Community HospitAL Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 pm at the East Commerce Baptist Church by Rev. James Hickey. Interment will be in Head Springs Cemetery. A native of Marshall County, he was retired from the Nashville Machine Company and was a charter member and deacon of East Commerce Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Daniel James and Addie Cortner Lasater. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 2 pm to 4 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Virginia Ray Lasater of Lewisburg; one daughter Mrs. Elizabeth Kaye McDaniel of Nashville; two sons, Richard Lee Lasater, Jr. of Murfreesboro and Leslie James Lasater of Portland; one brother Ernest Lasater of Belfast; seven grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be Presley Ramsey, Tate McDaniel, Richard Lee Lasater, III, Scott Lasater, Bobby Lasater, and James Ray. Honorary pallbearers will be Men's Sunday School Class of the East Commerce Baptist Church.
