Notes
a. Note:   Martha Louise Doucet Sick passed away suddenly on June 6, 2012, at her home in Houston, Texas. Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Earthman Baytown Funeral Home, 3919 Garth Road, Baytown, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 11, 2012 at Uvalde Baptist Church, 901 Uvalde, Houston, Texas with Pastor Joey Galloway officiating. Interment will follow at San Jacinto Memorial Park, 14659 I-10 East, Houston, Texas. Martha was born July 29, 1930 in Pelly, Texas to Adam and Violet Doucet. She was the youngest of four girls, her sisters being Beverly, Francis and Agnes. Adam died when Martha was very young and for several years during the Great Depression Violet raised her four daughters alone and well. Violet ultimately remarried Jess Newberry and they then had Martha's much loved younger brother Curtis. Martha and all her siblings attended Lee High School in Baytown, where Martha proved to be an outstanding student (class of '48) and enthusiastic Lee Brigadiers drum corps member. It was here she made her lifelong friends Patsy, Mary Jo, Georgia, Maxine, and many others. Martha was a happy girl and enjoyed the beach, her job at the telephone company, and dancing which is where she met a young WWII parachute combat vet named Cecil Sick on a summer night in 1949. She finally gave him a dance, and then some months later her hand on April 14, 1950. Soon thereafter, Martha and Cecil began welcoming their sons into the world: Cecil Jr., Randy, and Kent. For 46 years, Martha and Cecil lived, loved, danced, laughed, and prayed. Cecil passed away in December 1996. Martha embraced her many roles enthusiastically. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, travel partner, church volunteer, and many many other things. From the 1950's through the 1990's Martha was an accomplished executive assistant working with many local firms, including Brown and Root and a law firm downtown. She was very active and sought out every opportunity to exercise and get out of the house. Martha was particularly good with and loved by young children, both the ones in her family and any others she came across. She was happiest when with her family, travelling, and doing things about town with her friends. She never lost her love of dancing and music, with Elvis, ABBA, and "Gary and Sandy" consistently on her playlist for decades. Musicals and school performances were also always an important part of her life. Sparkles, bright colors, and a fancy hairdo usually came into the room along with Martha. Martha and Cecil traveled throughout the U.S. including Hawaii and Alaska, and saw Europe, Canada, and Mexico. Martha's bag was pretty much always packed, and she always up for an adventure and never turned down a ride in a Jeep, a sports car, 4-wheeler, a motor boat, or a sailboat. Nowhere was too far to go or too much trouble if her family members or friends needed her. She was planning her latest cruising adventure at the time she died. She loved all of her dear friends with whom she spent lots of time, including Christine, Bernice, and Natividad. Uvalde Baptist Church was her church home for more than fifty years, serving many of those years in the children's Sunday School. Her belief in Jesus was strong and she lived His example the best she knew how. Any donations in her honor may be made to www.UvaldeBaptist.org. Martha is the last of her generation. She was preceded in death by her husband Cecil E. Sick; her parents; sisters Beverly Garvey, Francis Tomek, and Agnes Baker; and her brother Curtis Newberry. Survivors are son Cecil E. Sick, Sr., and wife Ginger, from Houston; Randy Sick and wife Tammy, from Tomball, and Kent A. Sick, from Austin; grandchildren Melissa Toppass and her husband Johnny, Jacob Cecil Sick, Caleb Ewing Sick, Morgan Elizabeth Sick, and Sarah Ann Sick; great-grandchildren Grace Christine Toppass, Allie Faith Toppass, and John Ewing Toppass.
