D. 1860 we purchased a tract of land in the name of the above named association & held one very interesting fair, which proved a decided success & resulted in much good to our cause & the interest of our county. Then the unfortunate war came on & since which we have merely existed as a body of inactive members without legal authority to sue or be sued, to collect or be collected of, for the want of a legal existence as an incorporated body. And we now ask of our Honorable Body before adjourning to incorporate us as the law requires as a legal body, for the purpose of proceeding with the Agricultural and Mechanics Association, that we may thereby advance the interests of ourselves & our county generally. We ask that we be incorporated with the following named officers and members of the Association. With authority to frame such constitution of laws as may be expedient to carry out the objects of the Association, not in violation of the civil laws of the state of Texas. OFFICERS: J. P. Cole, deceased 1 a/c on Newton White for $10.75 Historical and Biographical Record of the Cattle Industry and the Cattlemen of Texas and Adjacent Territory, Vol. II--Biographical, (Artiquarion Press, LTD). Texas State Library, Austin by J. Frank Dobie Capt. Newton White lived in Alabama until he was twelve yrs. old and in Mississippi until 1851. In 1851 he came with his father to Corsicana, Texas and engaged in farming & brick making. He moved to Parker Co. in 1856 and was one of the organizers of that county. He enlisted as a soldier in McCord's regiment of the Confederate army, and was first promoted to Lieutenant and after a year to Captain. After the war he went to Jack Co. and embarked in the cattle business and to Young Co. in 1875 where he remained until 1890. In 1890 he moved to Donley Co. In 1859 he married Sarah Bright, who died within the year. On April 9, 1861 he married Susan P. Willet of Kentucky by whom he has eleven children. Capt. White, besides his war experience, has been in several Indian battles, and, altogether, has had an exciting history. He had no capital with which to begin a business life, and is one of the almost innumerable self-made men who have built up Texas, and whose lives are inseparably interwoven with the history of the Lone Star State.
Obit for Newton White from Tucumcari Public Library, 602 S.2nd St., Tucumcari, NM 88401 Old Pioneer Dies Newton White, more than 85 years old, died at his home six miles southwest of Tucumcari on April 24th of old age. Mr. White settled in Quay County in the early days. Despite his advanced years he was active until a short time before his death. Two Sons, Fred White of Tucumcari and Joe of Carrizozo, were here at the time of his death. Mrs. White, who is past 72, is still living. The funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 25th, by Rev. R. E. Stephenson, paster of the Methodist Church. Burial was made in the Sunnyside Cemetery.
Lilly Jean Beal Engleman, lillyj57@@aol.com I wrote to the New Mexico Department of Health concerning a death certificate for Newton White. They responded on June. 2, 2004 by stating they searched from Jan. 1900 through Dec. 1930 and were unable to locate one. They said no record is on file in the central registry and that is the only registry maintained in the State of New Mexico.
Buck Barry--A Texas Ranger by James K. Greer page 168 "Word now came from Fort Arbuckle, through Captain White in command, to the effect that the Northern Indians were concentrating in the Canadian River country. Colonel James Bourland, in command of the the Border Regiment with headquarters at Camp Wichita, Texas, wrote me that he thought hostile Indians of different tribes were being concentrated by chiefs Jim Ned, Jim Pockmark, and others, along the Canadian. So he transferred the Chickasaw Battalion to Fort Arbuckle and brought Captain White's company south and placed it on his line of defense."
page 172 "Early in 1864, the organization of the Frontier Militia, as provided for in an act of the legislature, was completed and Major-General J. B. Magruder received the Frontier Regiment commanded by Col. J. E. McCord. The Governor had tendered the regiment to the Confederate authorities in accordance with the act of the legislature and Magruder had accepted it. Six companies were ordered concentrated at Camp Verde, Fort Inge, and at Fort Duncan, two companies to the camp, while the battalion of two companies was divided; one company being stationed at Camp Colorado and one on the San Saba. The other four companies, "D", "C", "G", and "H", under Captains Rowland, Thompson, White and Whiteside, respectively, were assigned me at Fort Belknap. An order from the State Adjutant and Inspector General's office, by command of Governor Murrah, on Feb. 12th, directed us to muster the regiment into the military service of the Confederate States on the first of March for three years of the war, dating retroactively from the eleventh of Feb. 1863. Section three of the order praised our services against the Indians and lawless whites infesting the frontier."
