a. Note:   Immigrated to the United States on Ship Goethe, from Bremen Germany to Baltimore Maryland, arriving on 22 April 1854. Ship's manifest reflects Hermann, Beta Marg. and Dorette Gesine, from Delmenhorst, Oldenburg (Germany).
  Enlisted in the U.S. Army on 1 December 1863 and was listed on the Muster-in Roll as of 7 December 1863 for a three year period. Described as 39 years old, 6 feet 1 inch, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, occupation laborer, born in Bremen Germany. Was a part of the original organization of 9 Indiana Calvary Company A with Eli Lilly. Taken prisoner on 25 Septemer 1864 at Sulphur Trestle, Alabama, and held Vicksburg, Mississippi until his release on 25 April, 1865, at which time he was transfered to the US General Hostpital in Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, where he died on 12 May 1865. Personal inventory taken at time of death showed no personal effects.
