Note: Thelma was born in a dirt floored log cabin in Putnam County, Indiana - she used to tell a story that during the winter, the wind would blow under the door of the cabin, causing the rug on the floor to ripple. A graduate of Butler University at the old campus in Irvington, Thelma was a member of Alpha Chi Omega, and friends with one of the founders of the sorority. Following her graduation, she began teaching public school. Her marriage to Fred was "sub rosa," as if it were discovered, she would have lost her job (female teachers were not allowed to be married.) Her last teaching assignment was at William Penn School, #49. An accomplished artist, Thelma studied under Indiana artist Joseph Trover. One of her oils, of a covered bridge, won first place at the Hoosier Arts Salon. Her talents were not limited to painting, as her lifetime love was music.
