Notes
a. Continued:   Peter Jude was also known as Peter Frederick. His parents were John Jude and Mary "Polly" (Stotts) of the New River Valey in Virginia.
The 1810 Surry Co., NC census shows the household for "John Jude" included males: 2 <10, 1 10-15, 1 = or >45 and females: 1 = or >45. Consequently, John Jude and his wife Mary, also known as Polly, were both born before 1765. They had two sons John and Peter who were born between 1801 and 1810 or about 1805 and another son Martin who was born between 1795 and 1800 or about 1798. John Jude's nearest neighbor was Peter Stotts. The census shows the household for "Peter Stots" included males: 1 = or >45 and females: 1 <10, 1 16-25, 1 = or >45. Consequently, Peter Stotts and his wife were both born before 1765.
The 1820 Grayson Co., VA census shows the household for "Polly Jude" included males: 2 10-15, 1 16-25 and females: 1 = or >45. Consequently, Polly was born on or before 1775 and her oldest son Martin was born between 1795 and 1804 or about 1800 and her other sons John and Peter were born between 1805 and 1810 or about 1808. When Polly's son Peter married in Pike Co., KY in 1831, "Mary Frederick" gave permission for her son "Peter Frederick" to get married. Polly is a nickname for Mary.
The 1830 Pike Co., KY census shows the household for Margaret Stotts included males: 1 20-29 and females: 1 10-14, 1 40-49, 1 60-69. Consequently, Margaret was born about 1785 and her mother was born about 1765. Since there were no other males in the household about the same age as Margaret, it appears she was a widow which suggests her husband died before 1830. Also listed in this household is a male who was born about 1805 who was probably Margaret Stotts' son John Stotts, III. Her maiden name and her parents are unknown. It has been suggested that her husband's name was John Stotts, II; however, Margaret's marriage record has not been found. Even though it only remains a suggestion that Margaret Stotts' husband was named John Stotts, II, the 1793 Wythe Co., VA personal property tax list included two men who both were identified as John Stotts. Consequently, it is reasonable to conclude John Stotts, who was born about 1755, had a son named John Stotts, II, who was born before 1772. It appears John Stotts, II was Margaret's husband. Margaret's closest neighbor was Polly Collins who was the daughter of Olive "Ollie" (Stotts) Roberts and Polly was the niece of John Stotts (born 1755). This is likely the same Mary "Polly" (Roberts) Collins who married Peter Frederick or Jude in 1831 in Pike Co., KY. The census entry for "Polly Collins" included males: 2 <5 and females: 1 20-29. Consequently, Polly was born between 1801 and 1810 or about 1805 and she had two sons under the age of 5 indicating they were born about 1803. Another close neighbor was John Jude's son John Frederick or Jude who was born about 1803 and was listed as "John Jude". The census entry for John Frederick or Jude included males: 1 <5, 1 20-29 and females: 1 5-9, 1 15-19. Consequently, John was born between 1801 and 1810 or about 1805.
The following entry is found in the Pike Co., KY order book B 3-18 covering years 1831-1843:
"Ordered that a spa [subpoena] be awarded against Joseph Bevins Thomas Cannaday John Jones & Mary Fredrick to appear hear at our September term to show cause why Jacob Fredrick Collins [x's crossed over the name Frederick] Andrew Collins James Collins John Fredrick and Olley Fredrick poor children shall not be bound out according to law."
The exact date of this entry is not identified, but information suggests it was about 1837 which was a midpoint of the years covered in the order book between 1831 and 1843. The subpoena or order didn't include Mary's daughter Nancy Jude which suggests the date of the order was before Nancy was born in 1837. In conclusion, Mary "Polly" (Roberts) Collins-Frederick or Jude had two husbands who both died before she did. Her first husband whose last name was Collins remains unidentified and died before the 1830 census. Her second husband was Peter Frederick or Jude who died about 1837. Mary "Polly" (Roberts) Collins-Frederick or Jude who was identified on the aforementioned order entry as "Mary Fredrick" was probably a widow and apparently could not support her children on her own after her husband Peter died about 1837. During this era following the death of a husband, it was a common practice when a court would subpoena a widow to show whether she could financially support her children. If she was unable to do so, her children would be bound out or given away to others to be raised. Evidently, she was able to keep some of her Frederick or Jude children including Olley mentioned above and moved in with her mother Olive "Ollie" (Stotts) Roberts. This is supported by the 1840 Russell Co., VA census which suggests Mary was living with her mother Olive "Olley" Roberts. The census shows the household included 1m <5, 3f <5, 1f 5-10, 2f 20-30, 1f 30-40 and 1f 70-80. Since "Olley Roberts" was listed as the head of the household, that suggests her husband Jacob Roberts probably died before 1840. The household could have included Mary and her daughters Olly Jude and Nancy Jude as well as her son John Jude. The 1850 Russell Co., VA census also confirms Mary moved in with her mother Olive (Stotts) Roberts since the following 1850 Russell Co., VA census entry shows Mary was identified as "Polly Jude" and was head of the household which also included her mother Olive "Ollie" (Stotts) Roberts:
1850 Russell Co., VA census December 2 54th District
No. 1718 Polly Jude age 41 b. Grayson Co., VA Olly Jude age 17 female b. Logan Co., VA Nancy Jude age 13 b. Logan Co., VA William R. Jude age 8 b. Russell Co., VA Sarah A. Roberts age 14 b. KY Charlotte Roberts age 10 b. Russell co., VA Peggy Roberts age 7 b. Russell Co., VA Olly Roberts age 85 b. NC
Since William R. Jude shown above was 8 years old in 1850, he was born about 1842. Since Peter Frederick or Jude died before the 1840 census, this suggests William was not the son of Peter. This may explain why William Riley Collins was not identified after the 1850 census with the surname Frederick or Jude, but as a Collins. No other information has been found regarding Polly's daughter Olive "Ollie/Olley/Olly" Jude. Polly's daughter Nancy Jude married James McHenry Prince in Lawrence Co., KY on 3-29-1855.
Mary's son Andrew "Andy" Collins married Elizabeth "Betty" Smith on September 7, 1845 in Pike Co., KY. He was identified on several census records as shown below:
  1850 Pike Co., KY census
No. 716 Andrew Collins 26 VA Elizabeth [Smith] 24 KY Amanda J. 4 KY Wm. M. 2 KY
Andrew Collins was a close neighbor to Joseph Bevins who was listed in the previously mentioned Pike Co, KY sumbpoena. Since they were close neighbors, it is possible Andrew Collins may have been bound out as a child to be raised by Joseph Bevins.
Mary later moved in with her son Andrew Collins since she was listed as living with her son Andrew on the 1860 & 1870 Pike Co., KY census records.
1860 Pike Co. KY census July 20 Page 87 or 881
No. 398 Andy Collins 31 VA Elizabeth 34 KY Amanda 14 KY Wm M. 10 KY Louisa E. 7 KY Martin 6 KY Sarah A. 4 KY Luvena 3 KY Polly Collins [Roberts] 60 VA
1870 Pike Co., KY census Aug 18 page 101 Dist. No. 8 Post Ofice: Bent Branch
No. 77 Collins Andrew 46 VA Elizabeth 43 KY William M. 21 KY Louisa 18 KY Martin 16 KY Sarah A. 14 KY Luvisa C. 11 KY Mary 9 KY Thursa 5 KY Augusta D. 3 KY Polly Collins [Roberts] 64 VA
Since Mary was shown listed as "Polly Collins" on both the 1860 & 1870 census, it is possible she may have remarried another man with the surname Collins after her second husband Peter Frederick or Jude died or she may have reverted back to using her first husband's surname. Even though it is possible she may have divorced her first husband and later reconciled with him following the death of Peter, it is unlikely because the previously mentioned subpoena suggests she was a widow.
According to the 1850 Pike Co., KY census Mary's son Jacob Collins was living with Martin Fulkerson.
  1850 Pike Co., KY census
No. 156 Jacob Collins age 26 VA (household of Martin Fulkerson)
As the following excerpts show, he was married twice:
1-11-1847 marriage license Pike Co, KY for Jacob Collins and Elizabeth Ann Cavins. 6-15-1851 marriage license Wayne Co., WV for Jacob Collins and Elizabeth Spaulding.
The 1870 Wayne Co., WV census shows the family of Jacob Collins age 48 and his wife Elizabeth (Spaulding) age 38 and children.
At this time I don't have any additional information on Polly's other son James Collins.
Polly's son John Frederick or Jude who was previously mentioned on the Pike Co., KY order book as John Frederick married Nancy Anne Staton. He was identified on the 1850 Wayne Co., VA census as John Jude age 17 (born Jan. 7, 1832) living in the household of James Starr. According to a story written down by Luemma Crum Robinson for her grandchildren, she confirmed the conclusions made about the family of John Frederick or Jude. The only possible exception was the story about John Frederick or Jude being abandoned by his mother Mary "Polly" (Roberts) Collins-Jude and as a result was rescued from a fire by James Starr. Since there is usually an element of truth to stories handed down throughout the generations, it is possible Mary's husband Peter may have died in the previously mentioned fire. I have done other research on the Dempsey family which led me to some research on the Starr family. According to Starr family history, James Starr did not have any children of his own, but was blessed with wealth and took in children whose mothers for whatever reason were unable to raise them. According to the aforementioned court subpoena John Frederick or Jude was ordered by the court to be taken away from his mother or "bound out" to others to be raised. Since the following census entry shows Mary's son John Frederick or Jude was listed as "John Jude" in the household of James Starr, he was probably bound out as a child to be raised by James Starr:
The following entries for the 1850 Logan Co., VA census should provide some more clarity:
  522 James Starr 52 M Farmer $3,300 VA Rebecca Starr 34 F VA John Jude 17 M VA Joseph Dempsey* 10 M VA 14 Sep 1850
  83 Ruth Starr 33 F VA John Starr 14 M VA Henry Starr 9 M VA Polly Starr 8 F VA Shelton Starr 4 M VA
  * Research supports the conclusion this Joseph Dempsey is a duplicate of another person identified as Joseph Dempsey age 10, son of Andrew & Martha (Starr) Dempsey. Joseph was living with his uncle James Starr because James Starr was the brother of Joseph's mother Martha (Starr) who married Joseph's father Andrew Dempsey.
The following information details conclusions based on all the previous facts mentioned: John Frederick or Jude who was born 1832 was identified on the aforementioned subpoena about 1837 as "John Frederick". Later he was listed as "John Jude" on the 1850 census. His father Peter Frederick or Jude married in 1831 in Pike Co., KY using the name Peter Frederick when he married "Polly" Collins. Collins was the last name of Polly's first husband whose first name remains unidentified. As the 1850 Russell Co., VA census shows, Polly's mother was identified as "Olly Roberts". Olive's surname was Stotts before she married Jacob Roberts; consequently, the maiden name of Peter's wife Mary was Roberts when she first married the man with the surname Collins. If these conclusions are not nebulous enough there is another fact that can't be ignored and may lead to other conclusions. When Peter Frederick or Jude's father John Jude who was born about 1765 and was identified on the 1810 Surry Co., NC census as "John Jude", his nearest neighbor was Peter Stotts; consequently, Peter Frederick or Jude's father John Jude had to be connected somehow to Peter Stotts. In my opinion, John Jude may have named his son Peter after this Peter Stotts, which may imply Peter Stotts was somehow related to John Jude or his wife Mary or "Polly" whose maiden name was Stotts, but according to oral family history her maiden name may have been Jackson. Based on the information just mentioned, it's also possible her last name was likely Stotts. Please e-mail me if you have any thoughts or conclusions on all this information.
A summary of the Frederick or Jude family is found below:
There are primarily two major branches of the JUDE family in America. According to census records, one branch emigrated from Ireland to America and arrived in the state of Maine before eventually settling in the state of Minnesota. The other considerably larger branch appears to have English origins and eventually settled along the Tug River Valley in Eastern Kentucky and Southwestern West Virginia. This branch is known as the FREDERICK or JUDE family. Even though the surname JUDE is the original surname of the FREDERICK or JUDE family of the Tug River Valley, the surname FREDERICK was used as an alias by this family for approximately 100 years between 1820 and 1920 before this family finally decided to permanently switch back to using the original JUDE surname. The FREDERICK surname is German and was originally spelled "FRIEDRICH". Sources suggest JUDE may be English. Early records from the seventeenth century show a high concentration of the JUDE family located near the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, which today is known as Newcastle and is one of England's largest cities. It is located in the county of Northumberland, which is England's most northern county. Even though there are records showing the JUDE surname in other parts of England, it appears the JUDE family of Northumberland are the progenitors of the JUDE family that eventually settled in America along the Tug River Valley of Eastern Kentucky and Southwestern West Virginia. These descendants can trace their origins to the three sons of John JUDE, Sr. who was born before 1765. Those sons included John FREDERICK or JUDE, Jr., Martin & Peter. More specifically, those members of the JUDE family who live or have relatives in Martin County, Kentucky, are descendants of John, Jr. He was a renowned pioneer of the Tug River Valley born about 1800 somewhere in the New River Valley, possibly in Surry Co., North Carolina.
There is not very much information about John Jr's parents. They lived in the New River Valley and their names were John Jude and Mary (Stotts) who was also known as Polly. Apparently, John, Sr. died while his children were quite young and his widow remarried an unidentified German immigrant whose last name was FREDERICK or FRIEDRICH. John Jr's biological father, John JUDE, Sr., is recorded on the 1810 Surry Co., NC census as John JUDE. This is the earliest record found that pertains to this family in America. According to this record, John was listed as more than 45 years old indicating he was born before 1765. Ten years later, John Sr's widow, Mary or "Polly" is recorded on the 1820 Grayson Co., VA census as "Polly Jude". She was listed on this census as head of the household which indicates her husband may have died before the census was taken in 1820. Grayson Co., VA and Surry Co., NC are neighboring counties and the New River flows through Grayson County. Also, both censuses indicated there were three sons. Those three sons would have been John, Jr. and his brothers Martin & Peter.
Since Polly's new husband helped to raise her sons after her husband died, all three brothers assumed their stepfather's FREDERICK surname. Martin's descendants continue to use the surname FREDERICK. Peter did not use the FREDERICK surname very long and suddenly switched back to JUDE and his descendants continue to use the surname JUDE. Information suggests that John, Jr. assumed his stepfather's FREDERICK surname between 1820 and 1825 and according to legend, he came to Eastern Kentucky from the New River Valley area of Virginia and the Carolinas with fellow traveler Moses Stepp. Even though John, Jr. assumed his stepfather's surname, he apparently became closely associated with the family of Revolutionary War veteran Moses STEPP, who was another renowned pioneer of the Tug River Valley. In fact, one source states John, Jr. was considered a foster son of Moses STEPP. The exact reason for this close relationship has not yet been confirmed, but there may be a connection through the Jackson family suggesting John Jr. may have been related to Moses' wife Sally (Jackson) Stepp. In fact, according to noted family historian Clyde "Cecil" Fields, John Jude was "a son of a Jackson and was related to President Andrew Jackson". If the preceding quote was referring to John's mother, then Moses' wife Sally could have been John's aunt on his mother's side. This would suggest that Sally and Mary were sisters and Mary's maiden name was Mary "Polly" Jackson. According to family tradition, John Jr. often traveled with Moses Stepp into the wilderness looking for new hunting grounds and it was on one of these hunting trips that they came to Eastern Kentucky. Even though John, Jr. assumed the FREDERICK surname in about 1825, most of his descendants did not decide to permanently change their surname back to Jude until about one hundred years later.
John, Jr. became a lumberjack. He was a large man who was well known for his enormous strength and his exceptional skills in this occupation. Stories have been handed down for many generations describing his participation in various occupational endeavors including barn raisings. He was also a very competitive person and was very active in barrel lifting contests and even fighting with bears. Also, whenever he was challenged to a brawl he would never refuse to participate and gained a reputation for his fearless determination and strong will. This trait has become part of John Jr's legacy and anyone who is familiar with this family, knows how prevalent it is among his descendants.
Using his skills as a lumberjack, John, Jr. settled the brushy, pristine wilderness of southern Martin County, KY along Wolf Creek. Due to his fierce determination, he was able to prosper in a very rugged environment and established strong ties within his community. In addition to his association with Moses STEPP, he also established strong ties with the family of James RUTHERFORD and became a large landowner and raised a large family with several members who married in the RUTHERFORD family. Later, the family of Civil War Veteran Isaac MAYNARD, Sr. became closely associated with the JUDE family. The MAYNARD family was the largest family in the area and maintained a very close relationship with the JUDE family. In fact, Isaac MAYNARD, Sr. had 5 children who married in the JUDE family including three of Isaac's daughters who married grandsons of John, Jr as well as one son who married a granddaughter of John, Jr. and another son who married a great-granddaughter of John, Jr. The MAYNARD and JUDE families have maintained a very close relationship for more than 100 years, which has also resulted in many other intermarriages among these two families. The last time John FREDERICK or JUDE, Jr. appeared on a census was in 1880. On the 1880 Pike Co., KY census, he was recorded as "John Frederick" and stated that his father was born in Germany. Since FREDERICK is a German surname, John, Jr. was probably referring to his stepfather.
Even though most of the descendants of John FREDERICK or JUDE, Jr. use the JUDE surname, there is one branch of this family who continues to use the FREDERICK surname Apparently, John FREDERICK or JUDE, IV, son of John FREDERICK or JUDE, III and Sarah "Sally" RUTHERFORD, was involved in a family altercation and moved away from his family in Martin Co. and settled just west of Martin Co., KY in Morgan Co., KY near the Licking River and kept the FREDERICK surname.
