Note: Joseph Boner/Bouney was a Revolutionary War veteran. He enlisted after the Battle of Brandywine under Capt. Marquis Calmes in the second Virginia regiment commanded by Colonel Christian Febiger in Brigadier General George Weedon's Brigade. After enlistment his first engagement was at the Battle of Monmouth which occurred on June 28, 1778 at Monmouth Court House, New Jersey and then the Battle of Stony Point. After that, he was marched south under General Peter Muhlenberg but was with a number of others his fellow soldiers left sick at Halifax in North Carolina. After he had recovered was marched towards Charleston in South Carolina under the command of Captain William Payne, but the town was taken before they arrived and they did not reach Charleston. Shortly afterward, he was attached to the command of Col. Abraham Buford and he was in the rear guard when Col. Banastre Tarlton defeated Col. Abraham Buford at the Battle of Waxhaws and then there got wounded in the head by a sword and fell and while lying in his gore the horsemen rode over him and trotted on his right ankle and mashed it to pieces so that he never recovered the right use of it. He got off to the bank of a River and stayed there until his wounds healed. He then started and went to Major General Nathanael Greene and gave him a discharge as an invalid since he was disabled due to the injuries he sustained while in service. However, the discharge was burnt in the house of Philip Bouney. Afterward, he joined a troop of Cavalry under the command of Col. Richard Bowyer and under him was engaged in a skirmish at Yorktown a while before Cornwallace was taken in and he was badly wounded by a sword in the instep in a reencounter with the British horse troops.
In summary, he enlisted before the Battle of Monmouth in June 1778 and his last engagement was in a skirmish before the Siege of Yorktown in the fall of 1781.
On April 18, 1829, Judge Eli Shortridge approved his application and he was declared a soldier of the Revolution on the continental establishment for nine months and upwards. A certificate number 17583 was issued on July 3, 1820. The certificate states Joseph Bouney of Floyd Co. in the state of Kentucky who was a private in the regiment commanded by Colonel Phebiger of the Virginia line. His pension was inscribed on the Roll of Kentucky at the rate of 8 dollars per month, to commence on the 24th of April 1819. Certificate of pension issued on the 3rd of July 1820 and sent to E. Shortridge Judge for Floyd Co. Kentucky.
Joseph did not have a middle initial using the letter "B". In his Revolutionary War documents, he used the letter "B" as his mark which was a substitute for his signature. Whenever someone was unable to provide their own signature, it was a common practice to use the letter "x" as a substitute for the signature. However, Joseph chose to use the letter "B" as a substitute for his signature because it represented his last name since it was the first letter of his last name which was Boner or Bouney. Usually, when people provided a mark as a substitute for their signature, they usually wrote their mark below their printed name and they were instructed to center it between their first and last names. Since Joseph placed a letter "B" as his mark below his printed name and since it was centered between his first and last name, it made people assume it was his middle initial, but it was his mark which used the letter "B" as a substitute for his signature and people thought the letter "B" was his middle initial used for his middle name, but it was used to represent his last name.

Floyd Co, 1835 Report of Rev. War Pensioners (source Sep 71, TEK) Act of 18 March 1818: Joseph BOUNEY, private, Va. line, $96, rec'd $674.63, on roll 7-3-1820, commenced 4-24-1819, age 74, died 5-3-1826. Vet #S.35782, "was in rear gurard when Col. Tarleton defeated Col. Buford. He was there wounded on the head by a sword and fell and while lying in his gore the horseman rode over him, trod on his right ankle and mashed it to pieces so that he has never recovered the right use of it." He had bro. Philip BOUNEY m Catherine MEYER, Berkeley Co, VA in 1790's, in German Church, prob. Lutheran. I think the name Boney is derived from D'Aubigni, which was later DeBany, DeBones, or DeBoney, and Bouney/Boney, Sometimes DABNEY, or ABNEY also. See New Kent 1664.
