Historiography The Maxwell Coat of Arms illustrated left was drawn by an heraldic artist from information officially recorded in ancient heraldic archives. Documentation for the Maxwell Coat of Arms design can be found in Burke's General Armory. Heraldic artists of old developed their own unique language to describe an individual Coat of Arms. In their language the Arms (shield) is as follows: "Ar. a saltire sa." When translated the blazon also describes the original colors of the Maxwell Arms as it appeared centuries ago. Family mottos are believed to have originated as battle cries in medieval times. A motto was not recorded with this Maxwell Coat of Arms. Individual surnames originated for the purpose of more specific identification. The four primary sources for second names were: occupation, location, father's name, or personal characteristics. The surname Maxwell appears to be locational in origin, and is believed to be associated with the English, meaning, "dweller at, or near a large spring." The supplementary sheet included with this report is designed to give you more information to further your understanding of the origin of names. Different spellings of the same original surname are a common occurrence. Dictionaries of surnames indicate probable spelling variations of Maxwell to be Mackwell, Mackwells, Mack, Macks, Max, Maxes, Macxwell, Macxwells, and Maxwells. Although bearers of the old distinguished Maxwell name comprise a small fraction of the population there are a number who have established for it a significant place in history. Family Name History - Maxwell The surname Maxwell, which has been particularly associated with Scotland since the twelfth century, is of local origin, being derived from the name of a salmon pool on the river Tweed, near Kelso, which is still known locally as Maxwheel. Thus, the surname signifies simply "dweller at or near the salmon pool". The surname first appeared in Scottish records prior to 1150 when one Maccus, son of Undewyn, a Saxon lord in the reign of David I, obtained a grant of land, which derived its name from Maccus's Wiel, the fishery attached thereto (from the Old English "wae12, a whirlpool". References to the name in subsequent centuries are frequent and widespread. John de Maccuswell, for instance, witnessed a charter in 1210 and Eymer de Mackisuuell was sheriff of Peebles in 1262, as well as camerarius (private secretary) to Alexander II in 1260. The Maxwells, destined to hold many high offices, first became sheriffs of Teviotdale, and from the thirteenth century onwards their chief territory became Nithsdale., with their headquarters at the Solway castle of Caerlaverock. Frequently wardens of the West march, they were often involved in border struggles, and the fourth Lord Maxwell fell at Fladden. Among the clan's more private feuds, its particular adversaries were the Johnstons. Blazon of Arms: Argent a saltire sable.
