Born in Pa. Moved to Ohio with parents, Married in Ohio and in 1841 moved to Fairfield Twp. IA ( 1 1/2 miles north of Fairfield).
From Obituary... Geo. Kauffman, an old and respected citizen of Fairfield township, was born in Pennsylvania, July 27, 1819. While still young he moved with his parents to Ohio, where on June 11, 1840 he married Miss Esther Snook, with whom he moved to Iowa in 1841 and settled on their farm one and one-half miles north of Fairfield (IA). On this farm Mrs. Kauffman died in 1888 and Mr. Kauffman on June 8, 1899. To them were born nine children, three of whom, died in infancy, and one daughter at the age of seven years, and the oldest son in the army during the Civil War, on May 5, 1863. Three sons and one daughter survive their parents. They are: D. L. Kauffman of Marshalltown; W.W. Kauffman of Washington and L. S. Kauffman and Mrs H.C. Maxwell of this city. On September 16, 1890 Mr. Kauffman was married to Miss Jane Green, of Cincinnati, Ohio, who still survives him. He has been feeble for some time and his death was not unexpected; yet it is a sad blow to his family and friends. He was a member of the Lutheran church from infancy, and was an honest and upright gentleman, famed for his extreme industry and thrift.
Coming to this state with practically no means , he has amassed considerable wealth , which he leaves to his wife and children. Mr. Kauffman was greatly respected and the greatest consolation of those who mourn him is that he lived so long a life of uprightness and usefulness.

W., who now resides in Washington state, and Mrs. H.C. Maxwell and Lemuel S. Kauffman of this county. The mother died in 1888. September 16th 1890 Mr. Kauffman was married to Miss Elizabeth J. Green of Cincinnati, Oh., who survived him....
From the Fairfield (Iowa) Ledger, Wed., Feb. 6, 1884 George Kauffman, living just northwest of town, met with a peculiar accident Friday night. In taking off his boots he slipped and fell. Two sharp axes were standing nearby. In his fall his right hand struck one, and the thumb was almost severed by the sharp edge. The other axe also cut a small gash just above his right wrist. Dr. Snook dressed the wounds.
