Notes
a. Note:   Obituary of James Maxwell The Democrat News Nov. 1879, Waukon, Iowa At his residence in Waukon, Iowa on Sunday night, November 9th,1879 of Inflammation of the Bladder, James Maxwell, aged 77 years, 10 months, 27 days. The funeral services in memory of James Maxwell were held at the C.P. Church Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 11. A large and attententive audience noted especially for the large number of elderly people, assembled in honor of one of their number. Mr. James Maxwell was born in the state of Pennsylvania, Dec. 12, 1801. When 17 years of age he walked from his native state to Ohio, Montgomery Co., arriving there with but 25 cents as the sum of his possession in this world. At the age of 29, he was married to Miss Sarah Robertson of Montgomery Co., Ohio. When about 33 years old he removed to near Camden, Ind., where at the age of 45 he professed faith in Christ and united with the C. P. Church. He was soon after elected a ruling elder in his congregation in which capacity he continued to act until his removal to Iowa in 1854. During the year of 1856 he secured the services of one Rev. Armstrong, under appointment from the Board of Missions to preach at Waukon. The same year a congregation was organized under the care of the Presbytery, and Mr. maxwell elected a ruling elder in which capcity he continued to act until the time of his death. his last official acts for his church was his attendance upon the Meetings of Colesberg Presbytery which convened Oct. 13, and Iowa Synod which met Oct. 16, 1879. On the following Monday he went to visit relatives in Jefferson Co., Iowa, and the next Thursday was taken sick. After two weeks illness he was brought home by a relative, reaching here last Friday, Saturday he was much worse and soon after 12 o'clock Sabbath night, the light of his earthly life went out, we trust only that the lamp of life might burn with more heavenly brilliancy on the Eternal shore. The family loses an effectionate parent; the community a good citizen,. and the church an eficient oficer as well as the cause of truth and temperance a fearless defender. but our faith in the Divine Son of God and world's saviour enables us to believe and rejoice in the hope that our loss is his eternal gain. "And this is blest relief: My fainting heart it cheers; it cools my burning grief, And sweetens all my tears, These eyes shall see our loved one then Nor shed a parting tear again." O. E. Hart
