Notes
a. Note:   John Power Family The patriarch of the Mercer County Power family, John Power (see photo) was born in Kentucky, probably Pendelton County circa 1811. He married Jane McCann (born 1812, Pennsylvania), the daughter of William McCann on October 14, 1834 in Rush County, Indiana. The Power family moved to Mercer County in 1857 and resided on the land he entered from the government. To this union were born: Jospeh (1836), Leonidus (1838), Nancy (1840), Zarilda (1842), Orlina (A. J.) (1843), Andrew (1845), Mary (1846), Thomas (1849), John W. (1851), William (1853), and Margaret (1855). Following the death of Jane McCann in 1865, John Power married Mary A. Bennett. To this union were born two children: Charlotte (1867) and James (1869). The eldest son, Joseph, married Mary Hannah Milner, the daughter of Henry Rice Milner, on December 8, 1864 in Mercer County. Joseph served as a privateer in Co. E, 2nd Regiment of Missouri Calvary, known as "Merrill's Horse." During his four years of service he contracted a fever in August of 1863 near Clarendon, Arkansas. This fever affected his lungs and continuously plagued him until his death on March 28, 1872 at the young age of 36 years, 3 months. He was buried in the Chestnut Cemetery with a Masonic headstone (see photo), near many of his siblings. The young widow, with four children: James Henry (18 Sep. 1865 - 15 Nov. 1937, Okla.), Rosetta A. (7 Jan. 1867, m. Mr. Jackson), Mary S. (13 Apr. 1869 - 24 Feb. 1873, MO), and Margaret ("Florence") (11 Apr 1871, m. L. C. Peck in NM), remarried James R. Hamilton, the son of Henry C. Hamilton and grandson of Archibald Hamilton, on February 5, 1874 in Mercer County. The family moved to Clay Center, Kansas where Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton passed away after the turn of the century. James Henry Power (see photo) was the father of Della Laverda Power Maxwell (1909), the grandmother of Donald Power Maxwell, Jr., M. D. (1955). John Power has many descendents, not only in Mercer County. The Power name lives on in the son of Donald Power Maxwell, Jr., Jamison Power Maxwell (born April 26, 1996), the 4th great grandson of the patriarch John Power. Dr. Maxwell is searching for a photograph of Joseph Power and Mary Hannah Milner.
