  James had an older brother Charles who owned a hotel in Cresco. Charles was married to Martha, they married about 1914. James hit the rails for California. There he went to bakers school in San Francisco. He was there at the time of the great earthquake. He cooked meals for the people displaced by the quake in Golden Gate Park. James married Barbara Panek on 19 Jul 1906 in Seattle, WA.
