Notes from Wesley Russell Served at one time in the U. S. Army. Was sheriff of Pinellas County, Florida for several years and was holding that office in October 1919. Only one daughter was listed. **************************************************************** Information submitted to writer by Mary Lee Harrell states there were two children, a daughter Mrs. Henry Moore and Marvel M. Jr. **************************************************************** He was born Feb. 8, 1872 in Sutherland, FL now known as Palm Harbor and died Oct. 13, 1930 at Soldiers Hospital in Lake City. Married Elizabeth Catherine (Bessie) Smith June 4, 1905. Morsie Louise was born June 1, 1906 and my dad, Marvel Montgomery was born July 7, 1908. Marvel Melvin Whitehurst was the first sheriff of Pinellas County, Florida Died at Soldiers Hospital, Lake City, Florida. **************************************************************** Obituary Death Claims First Sheriff of Pinellas Clearwater, Oct. 14 -- (Special.) --Marvel M. Whitehurst, 63, first sheriff of Pinellas county and member of one of the oldest families of this section, died yesterday afternoon at the veterans' hospital in Lake City. Death was a result of a second stroke of paralysis which he suffered at his home near Indian Rocks about a week ago. He was taken to Lake City in a critical condition. The body arrived in Clearwater tonight. A military funeral will be given the deceased, who was a veteran of the Spanish-American war. Services will be held here tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock in charge of Spanish-American war veterans. Veterans of St. Petersburg post will attend in a body. Six pallbearers and three buglers will compose the funeral escort. Mr. Whitehurst lived in Pinellas county all his life. He was elected sheriff when Pinellas was first created in 1912 and served two terms. He was born near Palm Harbor. His mother, Mrs. L. J.
