The story goes that Artie and his brother Irvin started the local elevator union in Tampa.
Coy's niece, Annie (Sumner) Mason, recalled that Coy and Irvin would frequently stop by their home in Gardenville, Florida (just west of Riverview, Florida) when they were finished with their business in Sarasota and on their way back home to Tampa. They would visit with their sister, Delona Sumner, and their nieces and nephews before traveling back to Tampa. Delona would serve coffee and Coy would often bring candy for the children. Annie said that her sisters and brothers never had too much because their father was a fisherman.
Living with his mother and older brother Irvin on the 1930 U.S. Census for Hillsborough Co., FL, his occupation was "elevator".
Art M. 'Coy' Thompson of Tampa died at Memorial Hospital on February 11. Graveside services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Monday morning at Hackney Cemetery with Deacon Gary Cartwright officiating. Coy retired from Otis Elevator Company with 46 years of service. He was a past business agent and a charter member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 74. Coy was born in Wimauma on September 4, 1904. He worked and lived in Tampa, Greensboro, N.C., and Miami where he was a member of the Central Baptist Church. He is survived by five children, Maxine Maness, Glen Thompson, Charles E. Thompson, Nona Egnor and Tom Thompson. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. The family will receive friends Monday morning from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at the Stowers Riverview Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Cornelia DeLange Syndrome Foundation, 302 W. Main St., Suite 100, Avon, CT 06001 in his memory.

Artie was employed by Otis Elevator Company for many years and worked out of their Miami office. He retired with a pension from Otis. After he retired, he moved from Dade County back to Hillsborough County about 1977 and bought 3 or 4 acres in Valrico, Florida. His property in Valrico was just off of Hwy. 60. Make a right on Mulrennan Road and another right on Silver Lane. His property was down a dirt road about 300 feet where he had a mobile home under a lot of shady oaks. My brothers and I helped him move to this property as we owned a 1964 Ford pickup truck at this time. We also helped him clear some of the underbrush as it was really an unspoiled piece of property. His land was close to train tracks, and the trains ran infrequently, but when they did they would rumble past his home and shake the ground as the cars were usually hauling phosphate from the mines. After a time though, you would hardly notice them.
Artie told his grandson, Geoffrey Thompson, that when he was growing up he was the "unofficial" boxing champion of Hillsborough Co., as he had boxed and beaten the official champ. Grandfather was not one to boast so there is certainly some truth to the story.
