He was preceded in death by his son, Johnny Lee Whitehurst. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Vera Whitehurst; one son, Terry Whitehurst; three daughters, Joyce Kantrowitz, Patsy Vittor and Kaye Whitehurst-Miller; two brothers, Owen Whitehurst and William Whitehurst; one sister, Frances Pittman; eight grand-children and seven great-grand-children. Willard was a proud member of one of Plant City's pioneer families. In his youth he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and traveled to Louisiana. Upon leaving the CCC, Willard worked in Miami, where he continued his success as a welterweight boxer, fighting in the Golden Gloves. After marrying Vera, Willard owned Whitehurst Amusement Co. for 30 years. When retired, he and Vera built and operated Whitehurst Mobile Home Village. Willard was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He loved sports, trains, nature, animals, crossword puzzles, bacon, cherry turnovers and, above all else, his family. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 8, 2007, at Hopewell Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Jim Pierce officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
