Note: (Research):"Wynn," is the Old English word for "joy" or "pleasure," and is thought to be related to Latin "venus," which means, among other things, "charm." Re: John Bartley Wynn's father MichaelKnight17 (View posts) Posted: 1 Jan 2010 9:37AM Classification: Query Surnames: William Wynne and Elzabeth Echols are my 3rd great grandparents. The following excerpt mentions them as grandparents of Lucindie Wynne whom I am related to: "HISTORY OF LAURENS COUNTY, GEORGIA, pg 552: 4. John E. Duncan, born July 7, 1829, in Bladen County, North Carolina, died November 12, 1904, in Wilkinson County, GEORGIA, was a Confederate veteran. On June 17, 1849, in Wilkinson County, GEORGIA, he married Lucindie Wynne, who was born Octoner 11, 1826, died June 29, 1903. She was the daughter of William and Susannah Henson Wynne of Wilkinson County, GEORGIA. She was the granddaughter of Captain William and Elizabeth Echols Wynne and William and Martha Henson, all of Burke County, GEORGIA. John E. and Lucinde Wynne Duncan are buried at Salem Methodist Church." I don't know where the birth dates for William and Elizabeth come from that you mention however. I believe that William and Elizabeth migrated to Burke County, GEORGIA sometime in the 1780's from Virginia and were possibly married there before they came to GEORGIA. They then moved to Wilkinson County, GEORGIA sometime after 1810 and appeared in the census records there. They were on the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census records in Wilkinson County and did not appear in Wilkinson County after that. Re: John Bartley wynn's father mongkei (View posts) Posted: 2 Jan 2010 6:40PM Classification: Query Surnames: Thank you for that contribution Michael. Many families, in those days moved with siblings or parents too. Do you have any indication that William and Elizabeth moved from Burke County or North Carolina solely or with other members of the family aside from their own children? Gervaise Wynn Perdue suggested some time ago that male descendants of William and Bartley should have a DNA test. At the least that could establish a kindred relationship of Bartley's line to William Wynn. That idea seems to have fizzled but would be worth resurrecting. Re: John Bartley wynn's father MichaelKnight17 (View posts) Posted: 3 Jan 2010 9:29AM Classification: Query Surnames: A relative of William Wynne by the name of Peter Wynne, with his wife and family, moved from Virginia to what was to become Burke County, Georgia in 1755 after the ban on the use of slavery in Georgia had been lifted and lived the rest of their lives there. A Francis Wynne, with his wife Tabitha, and 5 children arrive in what was to become Burke County around 1763. Somewhere around 1785 - 1786, Thomas Wynne, his wife Mary Echols and their family moved from Virginia to Wilkes County, Georgia and at the same time George Poythress and his father moved to what was to become Burke County. George Poythress was related to the Wynnes. I am guessing that William Wynne and Elizabeth Echols came in that whole party from Virginia to Georgia. William and Elizbeth Echols Wynne then moved with their children from Burke County to Wilkinson County after 1810 without any other family members that I know of. The 1820, 1830 and 1840 census show him in Wilkinson County and the 1840 census shows him as between 70 and 80 years old and Elizabeth as between 60 and 70 years old. Neither he nor Elizabeth appear in the Wilkinson County census after 1840. Their oldest son William "Billy" Wynn either stayed in Burke County or returned there before May 1811 because he married Susan Hinson in Burke County on 11 May 1811. Their first child was born in Burke County in 1812 and shortly after that they returned to Wilkinson Conuty where they lived the rest of their lives. I think Gervaise is right about the DNA tests but no one has come forward yet to do the tests. I am not a direct male decsendant of the Wynn(e) linage so I couldn't help but I would love for someone to step up an do the tests. That might solve a lot of other problems we have regarding William Wynne and Elizabeth Echols too. On Saturday, 27th ult., a goodly number of the citizens of the district met at the house of Bartly Wynn for the purpose of organizing a Volunteer Company, which company was to be tendered to Gov. Brown for service. A portion of the old men of the district being present pledged themselves publicly that the families of those who left with the company would not suffer during their absence. When the call for volunteers was made forty-three stepped forward and enrolled. We then appointed a meeting for the next Monday at the same place. Our list was run up to fifty-four on that day. The election of officers was gone into on this day and resulted, without opposition, in the election of H.C. Bowen Captain, Thomas Ballard First, Jno. G. Linsey Second and James P. NeSmith Third Lieutenants. On Saturday 3d int., we again met at the 17th Court Ground when the doors were again opened, and I learn that the list was run up to seventy-seven--thus in the short space of one week making almost a complete company from one militia district, as there is not a single member of the company that claims his residence anywhere else but in the Seventeenth." In total, the estate was appraised at $2443.73 to include land, farm implements, food stores, crops and personal property. Bartley's grandchildren by Rebecca, his first wife, inherited $40 between them. His nine children, by Rebecca, were not provided for with the exception of Carentha (Wynn) Tilly and Mary Ann (Wynn) Singletary. David W. and Priscilla (Wynn) Thompson and Lewis M. and Louisa (Wynn) Thompson moved to Florida after Bartley deceased. Carentha (Wynn) Tilly received $100, a cow and calf. Mary Ann (Wynn) Singletary and her children were given the balance remaining from selling 582 acres of Bartley's land (less the tract given to Gatsy) after all just debts were paid by the Executors of the will. This land was appraised at $1125.00. The will provided 125 acres, and the receipts from selling livestock, surplus harvest and the household and farm items, to Gatsy Ann (Elkins) Wynn and her seven children, an amount that should be close to $1200.00. **************************** Land Records, Moved to Jefferson County Florida before 1830. I, too, "suspect" that Bartley Wynn could have been a son of William Wynn, Sr. (1760-1840's), and a brother of my William Wynn, Jr. (1790-1870). I have Bartley's first marriage in Wilkinson County, GA, and his records in Thomas County and Florida. I am extremely busy right now because I am moving from my beautiful home (since 1957) to a retirement place, where I will live independently, but if needed, they have beautiful assisted care rooms, skilled nursing care units, and alzheimer's units. So, getting rid of a lifetime of genealogical research, furniture, this and that, is a very traumatic thing for me. So, put my email address down and contact me after I move in January or February. Also, you should contact me soon because I think I will change my carrier and email address. I am getting 50-60 spam emails daily...some so filthy and there is no way to get rid of it, although I have a spam killer! John Greene Wynn was the son of Bartley Wynn (b.1793 d.1868) and his second wife Gatsey Elkin. There has been at time in researching Bartley's name that some have said his first name was either John or William. In all legal records recorded he always refered to himseld as Bartley so we will probably never know. Where you might find the confusion is John Green also had a brother named Russell Bartley, however, he went by the name Bartley. He was married to a Nancy Mize. I have in the last 30 years done extensive research on this line to ensure I have the right line. At the same time for a while also living in Thomas Co. was another individual names John Winn which as also confused people. Following is some of the information I have collected on Bartley and John Green Wynn Bartley Wynn---- Bartley is alledged to have been a minister and also a farmer. The WYNNS apparently lived in Jefferson Co., FL. before moving to Thomas Co, GA. Probate and administative records indicate this. In correspondance with SUSAN STEPHENS of Bloomingdale,GA on the WYNN family. According to BARTLEY's will which was drawn up by him on SEPT 19, 1867 and executed on MARCH 4 1868 in Thomas Co., GA. According to the book Gleanings of Grady County mentioned under the family listing of Gay Bird Coleman on 15 Oct 1865 Bartley is listed as one of the trustees in a land deed for the Pleasant Grove Church. Thisdeed can be found in the Thomas County Deed Book BB, Pg 210, the lot deeded is Lot 216 District 17. Another contact is Desta Dyal of Hampton, Florida (descendent of Louisa Wynn). Another contact is Louisa Snowden of Cairo, GA (descendent of John Green Wynn). Corresponded with Gervaise Wynn Perdue of Warner Robbins, GA who is writting a book on theWynn family reference Wynn information with her stamp. Bartley Wynn is identified as the Administrator of Burrell Taylor's estate in Thomas County dated Jul 1855. Isaac Spence is also mentioned in it. John Green Wynn--- John was married to Sarah Catherine Mills 29 April 1874 in Thomas County Sarah Mills b. 10/9/1857 d.11/27/1906 buried on Grady County, Bold Spring Cem. Contact Anne Louise Snowden, 2087 Pine Park Rd, Cairo, GA 31728(she is the g-granddaughter of Bartley Wynn). She said she has found land records connecting Bartley with Appling Co. More information forthcoming. John and Catherine appear in the 1880 census of Cairo, Thomas, GA with their 3 children. John is listed as a farmer. John and Catherine Wynn appear in the 1900 census of Cairo, Thomas, GA with 7 of their children. John is listed as a farmer. John appears in the 1910 census of Cairo, Grady, GA as a widow and four of his children. He is listed as a farmer. John and Lettie Wynn appear in the 1920 census of Cairo, Grady, GA with their children. Lettie is John G. Wynn's second wife. John is listed as a farmer. John and Lettie Wynn appear in the 1930 census of Cairo, Grady, GA with their children. John is listed as a farmer. I hope this helps you and I would be happy to share further information with so don't be afraid to ask. Be blessed Bill Haag
