THERE WERE TURKEYS AND DEER IN PLANT CITY WHEN W.H.J. CRUM FIRST CAME; Member of Prominent Family Knew City When it was Wilderness; Time was when W.H.J. Crum roamed the wilds of Plant City in an unconcerned manner to watch wild turkeys feed in the thickets and deer flash their white flag at him in flight. That was quite some time ago, but Mr. Crum has been more or less familiar with these human camping grounds for a considerable period. And for half a century Mr. Crum has been following the news of Plant City and East Hillsborough county through the columns of The Plant City Courier. Mr. Crum is one of the members of that little family of first subscribers to the paper. He read the first issue of the then SouthFlorida Courier and has been reading just about every issue since with the exception of two years when he was away from home. Mr. Crum, member of the well knwon family of this city, was born Dec.15,1869. He was the sone of David L. and Elizabeth E. Crum, who at the time of his birth lived between Dunedin and Ozona, then a part of Hillsborough county. He has been a resident of the county ever since. His parents came to the state as real small children with their respective families.
Recalls Old Days: Like other prominent pioneers of East Hillsborough, Mr. Crum has a genialmanner of recalling the old days and many of the old pioneers, members of whose families constitute prominent and familiar names today. The Wilders, the Blockers, the Burts, the Collinses, the Blantons, the Robertsons, the Everses and so on and so forth down the long list of pioneers who erased a wilderness in favor of Plant City, Knights, Midway, Mt. Enon and other communities around. In 1880 the Crum family moved to Plant City to the place where Dwight Crum, one of the sons, now lives. Mr. Crum, in company with numerous others, was among those who welcomed the first railroad train in to Plant City back in 1883. Forty-two years ago Mr. Crum settled the place where Jim Johnson now lives southeast of Plant City. After living there some years he moved his family to Plant City and lived for a year. Thirty-two years ago Mr. Crum moved to his present fine home and farm one and one-half miles northeast of Lake Thonotosassa. Mr. and Mrs. Crum have four children, three of whom live close to the old home. The children are; D.F. Crum, E.K. Crum, O.E. Crum and Mrs. C.E. Rogers of Brandon. End.
