Kershaw County Records - WPA Transcripts 1791 - 1799 The abstract here was first published in The Messenger, published by the Catawba-Wateree Genealogical Society, beginning in the June-July 1995 issue. The information was copied from a roll of microfilm: V344-13 - KERSHAW COUNTY RECORDS - WPA TRANSCRIPTS, obtained from the American Genealogical Lending Library. South Carolina Records 17 Aug 1793 - Know all men, I, MARTHA SPRADLING, do hereby acknowledge give and release my right of dowery or alamony of WILLIAM HARDAGE of Fairfield Co. by my free consent do not allow that I have not had any right or claim on the said HARDAGE from 20 Mar 1773, I do not believe I ever had any claim according to law hereby announce and revoke all bargain or contracts. Wit: ALLEN PERRY signed 14 Jun 1793, he saw MARTHA SPRADLEY sign article of writing to WILEM HARDAGE Reportedly, she died in Warren Co., TN. She was listed in the 1820 Lincoln Co., TN Census, p. 31, age 45+, next to son, Zachariah Hardage, age 45+. He was born in about 1771. She had a female, age 16-26, listed with her. (Ancestry.com has this census record mistakenly listed as Jackson Co., TN, however, if you go back to page 1, you see that it was actually in Lincoln Co., TN. For years it was listed as in Lincoln Co., TN. Warren Co., TN is not far from Lincoln Co., TN. All other Census records list her in Lincoln Co., TN in the 1820 census, not in Jackson Co., TN.) Since her son from her first marriage, Zachariah Hardage, allegedly named his first daughter Martha Winkle Hardage, Martha Spradley's maiden name may have been Winkle. There were some Winkles listed in the 1790 and 1800 South and North Carolina Census Records.
