a. Note:   Came from a hotel-owning family, grew up in his father's hotel at Tarbet on Loch Lomond. Left home when young, lived in Argentina and Australia before coming to Canada in 1888 and settling in Harison Hot Springs. Built a house there, was friends with and married the sister in law of Jack Brown, builder and first owner of the resort hotel there. They and the Browns were the only white family at Harrison Hot Springs for several years. He operated a small farm, mainly supplying eggs and milk to the hotel. For several years he commuted to Vancouver where he oversaw the management of a hotel owned by his brother Sandy who was partially incapacitated by drink. Moved to Vancouver around 1905.
