Note: James Mother Maria died when he was very young and he was sent to live with his grandparents, Phillip and Laura (Mann) Grippen.
James was wounded in the Civil War at the Battle of the Wilderness. He was mustered out in Williamsport and walked all the way back to Towanda, He was killed when a carriage he was driving was hit at the RR Crossing in South Towanda. It sheared the carriage right off and didn't hurt the horses at all. It is said that his wound affected his mind to some extent.
