Note: Input from Donna Logan on Maria. Says she shows name as Mariah. 6/28/97 Ans. and she is sending me Grippen history. I sent her an outline of Phillip on down. Research of Charles McCabe: Maria died when her son James Elliott was very young, at which time James was sent to live with his maternal grandparents, Phillip and Laura (Mann) Grippen. Here is what Nancy has sent me on this line: From Crippen Home page "Daughter of Phillip and Laura (Mann) Grippin, born 22 September 1820 probably in Union (now Vestal) Broome Co NY. Married about 1837 John Elliott. Information from Charles McCabe, a descendant, indicates that Maria died when her son, James Elliott, was very young, at which time young James was sent to live with his maternal grandparents, Philip and Laura (Mann) Grippin. Mr. McCabe also states that John Elliott appears in the 1840 census in Barton, Tioga Co, NY, living with the Ira Grippin family and that John had a family consisting of 1 female 20-30, 1 male 70-80 and 1 female 60-70. John Elliott became an itinerant farm worker and died in 1888 in the Bradford County Home." James Elliott, son of John and Mariah Elliott was born 12 July 1838 in Vestal, Broome Co, NY. I am not sure what else Nancy has but I hope this helps somewhat. Since Nancy isn't a descendant of Maria, I rather doubt she has much on the Elliott's, but her source, Mr. McCabe, may have more since he is a descendant. - donna VESTALwas formed from Union, Jan. 22, 1823. E. church at Vestal was the first religious organization in town.4 VE1 Samuel and Daniel Seymour, David Barney, Daniel Price, Wm. Coe, Ruggles Winchel, and Asa Camp, were the first settlers.
