Melchior J. Schwery Family
Melchior Joseph Schwery, son of Godfrey and Margaret (Jemming) Schwery, was born Jan. 6, 1880, on a farm east of Westphalia, Iowa. He attended parochial and public schools at Westphalia. On Sept. 12, 1905, he married Theresa Klein, daughter of Joseph and Theresa (Stoltz) Klein at St. Boniface Church, at Westphalia. They resided on a farm east and south of Panama, for all their married life. Melchior was a member of the Holy Name Society, and the Knights of Columbus. Theresa was a member of the Rosary Society, and a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Melchior and Theresa had 12 children; three sons and nine daughters. Alfred married Romana Goeser, and lives in Manilla, Iowa. Margaret married Wilfred Coenen and lives in Westphalia. Viola married Zeno Leinen and lives at Portsmouth, Iowa. Magdalena married Walter Hodapp (deceased). She lives at Council Bluffs, Iowa. LeVern (deceased), married Cecelia Petsche. She lives at Vail, Iowa. Verena married Joe Maiwald and lives at Harlan, Iowa. Zita married Larry Engel (deceased), and lives at Westphalia. Nonna married Leonard Adams, and lives at Santa Cruz, California. Theresa married Leonard Weliman and lives at Neola, Iowa. Melvin and Mildred are twins. Melvin married Verelda Schmitz and lives on the family farm at Panama. Mildred married William Leuschen and lives at Panama. Cleopha married Newmark Nelson, and lives at Mercer Island. Melchior passed away on Jan. 18, 1942. Theresa remained on the farm until moving to Harlan in April1948. She lived there until 1968 when she entered the Little Flower Haven in Earling. She passed away at the Harlan Hospital on Oct. 21, 1978.
