Note: *Notes for Melchior: From his 1942 Newspaper obituary. Melchior Schwery PANAMA - Melchior Schwery passed to his eternal reward early Sunday Jan. 18 at 2:30 a.m. at the Harlan Hospital, aged 61 years and 12 days. About his usual daily tasks the day before his illness, death came as a great shock to his family, relatives and friends. Melchior Schwery son of the late Godfrey and Margaret Schwery, was born Jan. 6, 1881, at Westphalia, IA. On Sept. 12, 1905, he was united in marriage to Theresa Klein. To this union twelve children were born, all of whom are living. Alfred, LeVern and Mrs. Verena Maiwald, Panama; Mrs. Margaret Coenen and Mrs. Zita Engel, Westphalia; Mrs. Viola Leinen and Mrs. Magdalena Hodapp, Portsmouth; Nonna, R. N. of Clarinda, IA.; Theresa, the twins Melvin and Midred and Cleopha, at home. Funeral services were held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning Jan. 20 at St. Mary's Church Panama, with Rev. M. B. Schiltz officiating at the Requiem High Mass. Father also delivered the sermon, citing instances of the duties of a true Christian father. Mr. Schwery was a kind and loving husband and father who was devoted to his family. He will be greatly missed by all his friends and loved ones. The Holy Name Society of which he was a faithful member formed a guard of honor and attended the funeral services in a body. Interment was made in St. Mary's Cemetery. The pallbearers were six neighbors, John Coenen, John Griener, Joseph Fromm, Leo Fahn, Clem Coenen and William Stephany. He leaves to mourn his loss; his wife, three sons, nine daughters, twenty one grandchildren; one sisiter, Mrs. Susan Leuschen of Panama; three brothers Theodore of Panama, John of Harlan and Godfrey of Portsmouth; besides a host of other relatives and friends. Those of a great distance attending the funeral were; Mrs. Mary Mushitz, Leo, Georgene and William Gau and Mrs. Margaret Mumm, all of Geddes, S. D., Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mahlberg of Dunlap; Mrs. Andrew Leinen and Mr. and Mrs. John Petsche Sr. of Irwin.
