*Note - Found a ships record of Joseph & Theresa Klein along with their children Johannes (John) age 1 and Peter age 0 (means born in 1878). Also traveling with them is a Phillip Klein age 64. They sailed from Rotterdam, Holland to New York City on the ship "Rotterdam". They arrived in the port of New York 29 April 1878. Obituary states he came to America in 1877 and was born in Joppenbagh, Germany.

Here is the scoop on Joseph Klein (1849)
"I started this family search stuff about a year ago. I just wanted to know where the Klein clan came from. I found out that Joseph was born in Koppenbach, Bavaria. His father Philipp was born in Pleitershem, Germany in 1812. This place is considerably further north than Bavaria. It is thought that the family moved south after the Napoleonic wars which ended around 1815. (Not sure of this).
Joseph and Theresa sailed from the Netherlands on the Ship Rotterdam. I have a picture of the ship and the ship's manifest.
Joseph and Theresia traveled with Philipp and their sons Johann(2) and Peter(6mos.). Philipp died April 3 and was buried at sea. The baby (Peter) also died before they landed but Theresia didn't want him buried at sea so she wrapped him up in a shawl and carried him for a couple of days (nor sure how long). After they landed the baby was buried in New York (probably Buffalo). The shawl that was used is in Texas with one of the younger Great-great-great-great grand daughters.
They landed on April 29, 1878 the port of entry was Castle Gardens, NY. This was the port used until Ellis Island opened in 1892."

According to the Castle Garden site, Philip arrived in the US. Same with Johannes and Peter who supposedly died on the trip. Was this just a copy of what was on the embarkation list and not a real accounting of who landed?
