They traveled with their four children. Their fifth child was Valentin born about a month after arriving in Illinois. Religious denomination: Catholic.

  APPEL JOHN -- died at his residence in Thompson township on April 3, 1875 will dated July 13, 1870 age 70 years, proved May 15, 1875.
  To my wife Eva Appel during here life and widowhood all my estate. To Barbry GERLICK the sum of $5.00. To my other daughter Lena DINTER formerly Lena APPEL the sum of $5.00. After the death of my wife Eva APPEL all the estate remaining to my children. Joseph APPEL, Valentine APPEL, Peter APPEL, Maria (Mary) APPEL, Lescelle APPEL, now SAWLER, Odell APPEL now Odell SAMM.

  "Miss Lena Appel became the wife of Mr. Tinkler October ?, 1866, in Galena, Ill. She is the daughter of John Appel, who was a native of Germany. To this worthy couple has been born a family of eight children, five boys and three girls: Anna, the eldest, is the wife of Charles N. Johnson; Charles married Ella Amos; Rosa died when about sixteen years old, on Christmas Day of 1886; and the remaining members of the family are Joseph, Thomas, Edmond, Amanda and Leslie.
  The parents of Mrs. Tinkler emigrated to America in the fall of 1849, locating in Jo Daviess County, Ill., where Mr. Appel died. His wife's death took place in Shelby County, Iowa, several years later. In their family were three sons and five daughters, Mrs. Tinkler being the fourth child of the family...."

  In the name of God Amen. I John Apple of the town of Thompson in the County of Jo Davies and State of Illinois of the age of 70 years and being of sound mind and memory do make publish and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner following that is to say -
  First I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Eva Apple during her life and widowhood all my real and personal property of whatever kind together with all money stocks bonds &c (?) that I may have for her own use and for her support during her life
  Second I give and desire to Barbary Apple now Barbary Gerlick (?) the sum of five dollars in addition to what she received heretofore-
  Third I give to my other daughter Lena Dinter formerly Lena Apple the sum of five dollars in addition to what she received heretofore Said amounts in second & third clause to be paid by my "executor" after the death of my wife-if she should "servive" me-
  Fourth I give and desire after the death of my wife Eva Apple all the estate remaining in her hands of whatsoever kind to the balance of my children herein named to wit: Joseph Apple Valentine Apple Peter Apple Marie Apple Lecuilu? Apple now Dercelle Sawler (something written in the margin) Odell Apple now Odell Samm share and share alike
