Notes
a. Note:   *Notes from Census data: 1850 census, Lancaster, Erie Co., N.Y. (Same county as Buffalo) listed Lawrence, age 34 born in Germany, staying with the Frankenberry family. 1880 census, Pleasant Valley, Carroll Co., Iowa listed Lawerence (63) and Mary (56) Hoffman and sons Joseph (19) and John (17). Lawrence was listed as born in N.Y. and his parents in Bayern. Mary's parents were both listed as born in France.
Notes (Jul 98) from Phyllis Wessling (wessling at ncn.net): The Laparl/Hoffman family was from Lancaster, N.Y., suburb of Buffalo. Joseph was baptised in St. Mary's Lancaster, N.Y. Lawrence Hoffman worked in a tannery in the Lancaster area. Laparl I have found spelled so many ways. My dad told me it was Lepperal when I first began research. The Laparls were from the Alsac Lorraine area in France and first U.S. record I have for them is land sale 1838. No record of purchase of the land. Finding records for them in N.Y. has been very difficult. Hoffman is a very common name.
Notes from Jeff Hoffman Jul 07 - http://www.jeffhoffman.net/ancestry/Page6.htm : In 1860 listed as Lara Hopman. Lawrence Hoffman worked in a tannery in the Lancaster New York area. They moved to Winneshiek County, Iowa, and in 1874 they moved to Pleasant Valley Township, Carroll County, and purchased 80 acres of land.

Obituary, Lorenz Hoffman, 1883 1883 , Carroll Co., Iowa Carroll Herald, February 14, 1883, page 5
Mr. Lorenz Hoffman, who resided in Pleasant Valley, attended the term of Circuit Court held here in January, he being one of the jury. On his way home the night of Jan. 20th, he froze his feet severely. Had he been a younger man in vigorous health this would have been a trifling matter. But he was 66 years old and had not been strong for some time. He took to his bed after a few days and rapidly grew worse. His toes mortified and sloughed away. Probably blood poisoning supervened. Monday he died. Mr. Hoffman was a genial man possessed of a good and kindly disposition. He was highly esteemed by all who knew him. The funeral will occur to-day at the Catholic Church in Pleasant Valley. He leaves a wife and six children, all grown.
