Note: Notes from Doris Harrington Sep 99: Otto married Maria Catherina Magerkohl Hahno, born about 1820. They had 4 children. Two died in infancy in Liemke, Germany. In 1851, Otto and wife and 2 kids emigrated to U.S. Maria and youngest son died at sea of cholera. The youngest son was Eberhard who was 5 at the time. He was known as Ed. Otto took the last name of Greteman. Otto married a second time to Elizabeth Keman, my g.g.grandmother. She raised Eberhard. Otto and Elizabeth had 6 children of their own. Eberhard the half brother settled in Oklahoma. The other children (some of whom went to Ok.) but eventually all this branch settled in Iowa. The 6 children were Frank (my great grandfather), Katherine, Jacob, John, William, and Bernard. Bernard (Barney) was the father of Bishop Frank Greteman as well as 12 other children. Otto (Johann Otto) and Eberhardt (Ed) came into US thro New Orleans. They first lived in Illinois and then when Otto remarried Elizabeth Kemen, they settled on a farm in St. Lucas Iowa. I believe Otto is buried there. Notes from Thomas Greteman (Sep 99); A letter written by Bishop Frank H. Greteman est. around 1990. "Dear Fellow-Gretemans, For may years, some of us have wondered about the area in Germany from which our grandfather, Otto Greteman, came when he emigrated to the United States in 1851. Recently, I found the original passport which Otto Greteman used when he came to this country with his first wife, Mary Catherine, and with two boys, one age 5 and a baby, age 1. Two other children had died in infancy in Germany. Many of our family already know that the wife, Mary Catherine, and the younger of these two boys died of cholera at sea. Consequently, Otto Greteman arrived with the 5 year old boy, whom we later got to know as our Uncle Ed in Oklahoma. The passport indicates that Otto Greteman was born in Verl, Germany, and at the time of his departure from Germany, was living in Liemke. These two towns are in the Archdiocese of Paderborn. I therefore wrote to the Archbishop of Paderborn and from their archives I am able now to give you the following information: The name "Greteman" comes from a farm place name which was listed as "Honner-lagen-Grete". The Honnerlagen place means "high place", referring no doubt to the lay of the land or the position of the house. The original place name can be traced back to the middle of the sixteenth century, about 1550. The Honnerlagen-Grete name appears in tax records for the first time in 1649, immediately after the Thirty-Years War. It is quite clear that the name "Grete" was not attached to this place prior to 1604. Therefore, it is thought that some time in those years, a daughter by the name of Grete married and was given the farm place which then became known as "Honnerlagen-Grete". In Germany, family names were generally not developed, but identification was by the place on which the family lived. The Paderborn Archdiocese also sent me copies of the marriage record of our grandfather, Otto Greteman, and the first wife, Mary Catherine, who died at sea. This marriage took place on the 31st of July, 1840. The father of Otto Greteman was Andrew and the mother was Anna Mary. There were listed as farmers in the Bornholte village. I also received a copy of the birth and baptismal record of Otto Greteman which lists him as having been born on March 27, 1817 in Bornholte, and baptized on March 29, 1817 in Verl. His father is given as Andrew Honnerlagen-Grete (Greteman) and his mother is listed as Anna Mary Johann-in-Lau (which translates "John in the Valley"). At that time, in 1817, the father Andrew is listed as being 28 years of age. the name Honnerlagen-Grete disappeared from the village of Bornholte in 1851, which is the year that our grandfather, Otto Greteman, came to the United States. I also received a picture of the farm home where our ancestors lived prior to 1851, as well as a map of the farm places of the immediate area. Those of you who are interested in more information might let me know and I will see whether I can get some of this duplicated. It is of course, all in German. For younger members of the family, I should add that Otto Greteman late married Elizabeth Kemen who was therefore my grandmother. The Kemen family still lives in the Racine and Bristol, Wisconsin area. Wishing all of you a Blessed, Christmas and a Happy New Year, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Bishop Frank H. Greteman Notes from http://www.angelfire.com/ia2/stlucas/greteman.html Jul 07 - Families of St. Lucas: Johann Otto Greteman was born on 27 Mar 1817 in Bornholte, was christened on 29 Mar 1817 in Verl, died on 23 Nov 1867 in St. Lucas at age 50, and was buried in St. Lucas Cemetery. Johann married Maria Catherine Magerkohl Hahno, daughter of Joannes Magerkohl Hahno and Elisabeth, on 31 Jul 1840. Maria died in 1852. They had one son: Eberhard Bernhard. She was baptized on 10 Apr 1808. http://www.angelfire.com/ia2/stlucas/greteman.html Jan 2010 - 2-Johann Otto Greteman was born on 27 Mar 1817 in Bornholte, was christened on 29 Mar 1817 in Verl, died on 23 Nov 1867 in St. Lucas at age 50, and was buried in St. Lucas Cemetery. Johan Otto and his remaining son, Eberhard, age 5, landed at New Orleans and traveled up the Mississippi River to Chicago. He married Elizabeth Kemen circa 1853. After residing in Chicago for a few years they moved to Minnesota for one year. They came to Iowa, and farmed in Fayette County. This was translated from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published in a special 25th Anniversary Edition of the paper on Friday, 20 September 1899. No changes were made to the place or name spellings, but notes at the end were added. It reads as follows: ....(1852) immigrated to America....., but during the trip the family suffered a heavy blow from fate. A murderous cholera outbreak occurred aboard the ship, and (his wife) and also a (son) were taken by the sickness, whereupon they and many other deceased passengers found a watery grave at sea.
