Note: Notes: Obituary supplied by Sandy Stiemke, May 01: From Chickasaw County Genealogical Society, New Hampton, IA: DEATH OF ARNOLD HUGEBACK - March 21 1907 Long-Time Resident and Much Esteemed Citizen of Deerfield Township Passes Away. Mr. Arnold Hugeback died at his home in Deerfield Township on Thursday, March 14, 1907, aged 83 years. The closing days of a long and honorable life were like the silent, peaceful moments of twilight when the tired world sits contemplative after its day's toil. Peacefully he yielded up his spirit and was at rest. Arnold Hugeback was born in Oldenburg, Germany, August 18, 1824. In early manhood he was a brave soldier for his fatherland in the war of 1848, and soon thereafter came to America settling in Pennsylvania among the mines. In 1856 he came west and located in Sauk County, Wis., where he lived on a farm twenty-four years. In 1880 he came to Chickasaw County and bought the farm in Deerfield Township, which continued to be his home till death. Deceased is survived by his wife and eight children and four step-children: The children are: John, Joseph, and Nicholas Hugeback and Mrs. Katie Gardner of Deerfield Township; Henry Hugeback of New Hampton; Mrs. Mary Hocking of San Francisco; Anton Hugeback of Carroll County, Iowa, and Mrs. Susie Brown of Wabasso, Minnesota. The stepchildren are Fred Franzwa of Carroll, Iowa; Peter Franzwa of St. Paul; Martin Franzwa of Mondova, Wis. and Arnold Franzwa of Alpina, South Dakota. The funeral was held at St. Mary's church in North Washington on Saturday, March 16, 1907, conducted by Rev. Fr. Probst, and interment was in the cemetery belonging to the church. A large number gathered to pay loving tribute to one whom they had known so many years as a noble Christian gentleman, neighbor and friend. The 1870 Honey Creek, Saut Co., Wisc. Census shows Arnold as a US Citizen over 21 years of age. See LDS Mircrofiche No. 604826, page 19. Indicates Arnold Hugeback and Anna W. (M?) died in Honey Creek. *Note: Arnold owned 40 acres of farmland in Sauk Co., Wis., (probably in or near Honey Creek), according to the General Land Office Records for Wisconsin. The land office record was dated 1 Jun., 1858. According to The History of Sauk County Wisconsin; Chicago 1880; Western Historical Company, "A. Hageback" was the chairman of the sixteenth and seventeenth annual town meeting, 5 Apr., 1864 and 4 Apr., 1865 respectively. Arnold Hugeback is buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in North Washington. It appears that Arnold moved to Deerfield Township in Chickasaw County, IA sometime after 1880 and before 1898. ST.
