Note: In the St. Aloysius chapel letter from Sauk City, WI written in 1978, Fredrick Leikem's wife's name is listed as "R." or "Ruth". Her obituary, 1860 census, and other family documents list her name as "Catherine". Obit provided by Nancy Lichtle - knlichtle at mchsi.com Sep 04, Translation of Mar 1896 obit: "Catherine Leikem, one of the old settlers of this county, died on Thursday, March 12 at the age of 83 years at the home of her son-in-law, where she lived. Her death was the result of the weakness caused by her old age. Lady Leikem was born in Moerlenback in the residential area of Trier. At 18 years she married and in 1834 she and her husband came to America. At first they settled on a farm in McHenry County, Illinois where later the village of Johnston was erected and where one son, Peter Leikem, still lives. In 1848 they moved to a farm six miles from Kenosha, Wisconsin and later moved to a farm in Honey Creek. Later in 1872 her husband died at the home of his son, Martin Leikem in Sauk City. The deceased bore 14 children, five of whom are still alive, namely, Martin Leikem of Sauk City, one daughter who married Schmeid Meyer (sp?) in Sauk City, and now lives in the state of Washington, Peter Leikem of Illinois, Anton Leikem in Chicago, and one daughter who went to the convent, and now lives in Decatur, Indiana. Another daughter, Mrs. Reuland in Sumpter, with whom she lived, died several years ago. She was buried Saturday, March 14, in the Catholic cemetery in Sauk City. May she rest in peace." Burial: St. Aloysius Cemetery, Sauk City, WI; Immigration: 1843 Birth city is listed by Nancy Lichtle as "Moerlenback and Mirlenback in Trier, Prussia". I've located a "Moerlenbach" in southern Hesse stat, but nothing else. Other spellings I've seen are "Murlenbach" and "Muerlenbach". Notes from Sandy Crary Mar 01 - "I have been puzzled by the 1870 Sauk County, Honey Creek township census which shows a 4 month old William Hugeback next door to Arnold and family. I find that the Reiland/Reuland family was connected to the Leikum family - source newspaper account of March 26, 1896 - death of Catherine Leikum age 83. Of 14 children, 5 still living- mentioned that "another daughter Mrs. Reuland died several years ago." Notes from Kayfleming at aol.com on 5 Jan 05: I was just going through some records of Murlenbach, Germany and came across something that I think may fit into the Leikem/Theissen research I was into a couple months ago. Murlenbach is near Prum and north of the Trier area- actually closer to Prum. I found in the birth records some recorded to a Friederich Leuken and Catherine Theissen for a Matthias born Jan 27, 1832 and Peter, born 23 Aug 1839 and Laurence born Jan 9, 1842. This last time the father's name was recorded as Friederich Lecken and mother 's Catherine Theissen. I also found an Anne Catherine Theissen born to a Martin Theissen and Catherine Leimbach on Jan 24, 1816. Our Cath and Fred. probably named Martin Leickem after her father.
