"Martin Leikem and Elizabeth Kraemer were married January 1, 1854. His parents were F. Leikem and R. Theissen. Her father was James Kramer."
Obit provided by Nancy Lichtle - knlichtle at mchsi.com Sep 04, translation of 1896 obit: "On Wednesday of this week the well known Martin Leikem died due to a broken leg which he got two months ago when he jumped out of his wagon in front of the Astor House on Water Street. His horse was restless and he wanted to get out of the wagon but the horse became restless very suddenly, it bounded forward and threw him breaking his leg below the knee. The break was serious and since the leg had been damaged by an earlier break, blood poisoning set in. This slowly led to his death.
At the age of nine years Martin came to America with his parents. At first they settled in Illinois but later in 1852 they moved to a farm in Honey Creek. There he married the lively Elizabeth Kramer. The marriage was childless. At first they lived on the farm but later they moved to Sauk City where the deceased carried on a profitable business of sewing machines and often sold clothing. In his last years he was an agent for sewing machines; he also dealt with pumps driven by water power. On August 10 he reached the age of 65.
He will be buried on Friday morning from St. Aloysius Church in the adjoining cemetery.
