Note: Oral history from Margaret Rupiper Hugeback 27 Jan 99: I remember Anton Hugeback , not only as a hard-working farmer, but also he was a good businessman. He was the distributor of Alpenkrauter which people bought from him. It was considered a natural remedy for good health. Actually, it was to clean out your system...worked like a laxative. Secondly, Anton was a Bee Keeper. He had hives of bees which he harvested and sold the honey. Mother remembers how he was the only member of the household that the bees would not sting. Anton was devoted to his church, Holy Angels in Roselle. He was on the church board and always donated money as well as labor. She remembers how he would load wagons of coal and take to the church which would be put in the basement furnace in the church. Anna Hugeback, Anton's wife, was always baking the best biscuits, breads, pies, etc. I remember how she always carried all the meals to the dinning room which was separate from the kitchen. They were the only family that I can recall that never ate in the kitchen, always the dining room. I have enclosed a picture of my mother and her five children. From left: Linda, Susan (me) Romayne, Margaret, Vera, and Inez. One brother, Harv, died of cancer in 1994. Inez, on the far right and the oldest, was born 3 months premature. She was given a million to one chance of surviving. Fortunately, she was placed in a shoe box (2+ pds was considered the lowest of low birth weight in those days) and driven to the hospital from the farm and was the first baby to be placed in the newly acquired incubator in the Carroll Hospital where she remained for three months. Although she suffered some brain damage from lack of oxygen, today she is an avid reader and loves people! As you can see, we were celebrating Christmas. Actually, we were at the airport because my brother was ready to return home.
