  Passenger Departure Lists
During the 1800s most French and south German emigrants left through the port of Le Havre. The records of departures from this port are called passenger lists. The information in these lists varied over time but usually included name, age, occupation, origin, and sometimes birthplace. There are only a few, incomplete passenger lists for ports in France, and they have no indexes.
The only lists available for the French port of Le Havre are lists of crews and passengers on some commercial cargo vessels. They are very incomplete. Very few passengers sailed on cargo ships. Passenger vessels are not included. These lists are not indexed. A few records from Calais, Cherbourg, Brest, Lorient, La Rochelle, and Dieppe are available at the French National Archives.
The Family History Library has filmed the Le Havre commercial cargo vessel passenger lists for the years 1750 to 1886. The film numbers are listed in the Place Search of the Family History Library Catalog under-

  Le Havre Passenger Index
A French genealogical society has discovered a 100-year-old card file of 45,000 passengers, 25,000 sailors, and 5,000 retirees at Le Havre from 1780 to 1840. The source of the index is uncertain and it is difficult to determine how comprehensive it is. It does not correspond to the unindexed lists mentioned above. The passenger cards usually show name, maiden surname of the spouse (including cross references), birth date or age, birthplace, parents, date and place of embarkation and debarkation, and, for French ships, the vessel's name.
Researchers may send written inquiries to learn if a relative is indexed. The society can search only for passengers between 1780 and 1840, and they will search only for a specific name. They will not respond to vague requests to search for anyone with a certain surname. Send the correctly spelled given name and surname of the passenger, a self-addressed envelope, and three international reply coupons (purchased at large post offices) to-

Alsace-Lorraine Emigration Indexes. Many French, Swiss, and Germans lived in Alsace-Lorraine or passed through it to emigrate. Several indexes help identify many of them.
Alsace Emigration Index. The Family History Library compiled an index of persons emigrating from or through Alsace-Lorraine from 1817 to 1866. About half the names are from France. The alphabetical index gives the emigrant's name, age, occupation, place of origin, residence, destination, passport date, and source microfilm number. Not everyone who emigrated via Alsace is in this index. The index is easiest to find in the Author/Title section of the Family History Library Catalog under "Alsace emigration index." It is also listed as:
France. Minist?re de l'Int?rieur. Registres des ?migr?s, 1817-1866 (Register of emigrants). Salt Lake City, Utah, USA: Genealogical Society of Utah, 1977. (Family History Library film 1125002 - 1125007.) Text in English.
Alsace Emigration Books. Cornelia Schrader- Muggenthaler used part of the Alsace Emigration Index, other emigration records, passenger lists, genealogies, genealogy periodicals, and newspaper articles to compile the following index:
Schrader-Muggenthaler, Cornelia. The Alsace Emigration Book. Two Volumes. Apollo, Pennsylvania, USA: Closson Press, 1989-1991. (Family History Library book 944.38 W2s; not on microfilm.) Text in English. This index has over 20,000 entries, mostly of 1817-1870 emigrants.

Alsace Vital records and parish books of Alsace
Some problems with genealogical research exist in Alsace due to the diversity of languages and of religions. The former province of Alsace consisted of the present d?partements of Haut-Rhin, of Bas-Rhin and the Territory of Belfort. From the 9th Century to the end of the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) these territories were part of the Holy Roman Empire, but later Alsace was gradually divided into a mosaic of virtually sovereign landlordships. The Reformation brought the "cujus regio ejus religio" rule, forcing the people to adopt the religion of their prince. Between 1648 and 1871, Alsace moved little by little from a feudal system under the control of the German Empire to the absolute monarchy of the french regime.
It must be noticed that the church books were managed distinctly according to the religion: one book for the Catholic churchgoers and another for the Reformed faith. The Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685) had quite no impacts in Alsace and a complete freedom of practicing their religion was left to the ministers of the Lutheran Church. Alsace is the only region of France were the Protestant Church books are so comprehensive.
By decision of the Council of Trent, the records of the Catholic Church of the dioceses of Basle, Speyer and Strasbourg were written in Latin until after the end of the Second World War.
The parish books of the Protestant, the Reformed or the Lutheran Church were written in German.
Another important point that must noticed is the presence in Alsace of a major jewish community. By his imperial edict of 1808, Napol?on forced them to choose a hereditary family name in order to register their certificates in the French civil records. This obligation generated the creation of cross-reference lists of old and new family names. The most interesting documents of this religion are marriage settlements, even if they are written in hebrew. Since 1701, these records had to be deposited by the Royal notarial offices. A census was made in 1784 as a counting of jewish prople who settled in Alsace. It is of greatest interest for genealogical research.
From 1792 until 1871, civil records were written in French according to the French law. After the Treaty of Frankfurt, Alsace and the german-speaking part of Lorraine were annexed to Germany until 1918. Only the Territory of Belfort was left to France. Civil records were written in German between 1871 and 1918. In 119, the departements of Lower Rhine (Bas-Rhin) and of Upper Rhine (Haut-Rhin) went back to France and the civil records were written in French again until 1940. Between 1940 and 1945 the civil records were written in German
  Feb 13 from http://www.archives.com/genealogy/family-heritage-french.html
The French census is taken every 5 years beginning in 1836 (earlier in some communities) which contain name of all members living in a household, dates and places of birth, nationality and occupation. However these are not indexed and are rarely used in French Genealogy as locating names of households are notoriously difficult without a street address.
Birth, Death and Marriage records mainly date from 1792. Known in France as Registres d'?tat-civil (records of civil registration) they are held at the Le Mairie (town hall) where the event took place. The department archives hold duplicates of these after 100 years. The registers include wide margins which often records extensive information on an individual. A birth record may hold margin notes including marriage date, date of death and the place the event took place. Many of these are now online free of charge along with other departmental archives and Decennial Tables (a ten year alphabetical index from 1793, of births, marriages and deaths registered by the Mairie), although many are images of the original books and are not searchable, (no more time consuming than searching microfilms and you can do it from home!) Copies of civil records can be ordered from the local Mairie. Any records less than 100 years old are not available to the public due to French privacy laws and you will need to contact the local Mairie to make any requests.
Outside of France the best source of these civil records is the Family History Library in Salt Lake City who have microfilmed civil records of about half of the Departments in France up to 1870 and Decennial Indexes for nearly every town in France. You can search for which microfilms are held online at the Family History Catalogue.
Prior to 1792 parish registers are the most valuable genealogy resources. In France these date back to as early as 1334, these contain as a minimum, the names of people involved, date of even and sometimes parents' names, ages, occupations and witnesses. Parish registers prior to 1792 are held by the Archives Department ales, although some small parish churches still retain these old registers. Some parishes no longer exist and now belong to a neighboring town so always check the neighboring parish if you cannot locate a record. Most departmental archives will not perform parish record research for you but many of these records are now available on line at the Family History Library and other sources.
Parish records after 1793 are held by the parish and you will need to contact the local Diocese who is often happy to help for a small donation. France also holds well maintained cemeteries. Cemetery management in France is seen as a "public concern" and so legible inscriptions survive from as early as the 18th century. Cemetery records again can be found at the local town hall.
French Military records can be located at the Army and Naval Historical Services in Vincennes, France and records survive from the 17th Century and can include names of a serviceman's wife, children marriage and names and addresses of next of kin. However, French privacy laws mean these are not accessible to the public from 120 years of the soldier's birth, so are rarely used in French genealogy.

History Of St. Mary's The settlement now known as Lancaster, gradually appeared. First known as 'Cayuga Creek,' the first settlers came in 1803.....In time, the immigrants came from Germany, principally from Alsace and Bavaria, in the 1820's and 1830's. These were the first Catholics in Lancaster. In 1834 their were 15 Catholic families in Lancaster. They received care from Fr. Nicholas Mertz, founder of St. Louis Church in Buffalo. These families walked eleven miles to church on Sundays.Fr. Mertz realized that these families needed a closer, more permanent spiritual home.Under his direction and with amazing foresight, these German families pooled their resources to purchase the land for the church.
