Note: a RR. Listed in the 1906 Leadville city directory is a John J.Finnegan, switchman at the Arkansas Valley Smelter, residence inStringtown. Is this my John? The 1900 census shows him as head ofhousehold, lists wife, Sadie and Brother, Michael. Gives John's birthyear as 1872 - that has to be wrong. Beginning to think thetraditional d.o.b. for him is erroneous, also. Magheross parishrecords show a John Finnegan, son of John and Mary Byrnes b. 1869 Arthur Goodrich stated John had never served in Army or Navy in thepapers filed at VA Hospital. Article in the Aspen Democrat, Aspen, Pitkin County, Colorado. forThursday morning Jan. 28, 1909 "MIDLAND BRAKEMAN KILLED. About 4:30 yesterday afternoon CoronerBlakemore received word from Thomasville that John Finnegan, a Midlandbrakeman had been killed at that place. It seems that Finnegan inattempting to get on the rear end of the moving train slipped andfell, his head striking on the rail crushing his skull. Finnegan was aresident of Leadville where he leaves a wife. Coroner Blakemore leftlast night for the scene of the accident to determine the cause ofdeath. He decided that an inquest was unnecessary and the body wastaken to Leadville last night on No. 6." The Leadville paper printed an article, also. 1900 census in Leadville, Colorado: (foto copies on hand) John Finnegan, head of household, white male, born Dec. 1872, 24 yearsold, married for 3 years, born in Ireland, both parents born inIreland, immigrated in 1890, in this country for 10 years, naturalizedcitizen (his certificate show his date of nat. as Oct. 1901),occupation switchman (illegible), unemployed for 4 month of the prioryear, able to read, write, speaks English, renting his home, living ina house, not a farm. Note: articles I've copied. One from the Aspen paper and one from theLeadville paper. His brother, Mike, filed the death cert. Copy on hand. His info onbirth and age do not agree with the parish records and Brit. birthregistration records. John's home address at the time of his death was 315 Maple St. Lookslike he lived here for a while. His son, Frank, was born here 21 Aug,1907.
Note: Family info verifies pretty much what is noted in the two newspaper
