Note: {geni:occupation} AJ: This Jesse is solid {geni:about_me} Andrew Jarrett's guess is that this Jesse belongs here. James Roosevelt Tatum's book states he 'might' be Hugh's brother. I think it is more likely he is his cousin because we know that this Jesse's father was also named Jesse and there was an Uncle of this Jesse named Jesse (married to Amy, and they had kids). Seems a good fit but not yet proven. Information Provided by Pat Mill patmill60@@bellsouth.net Jesse was born between 1802-1805 in South Carolina . He died after 1880 and was buried in an unmarked grave in the Roswell Methodist Church Cemetery in Roswell , Ga. He married Sarah E. Rawson ( Rowzee ) on April 9, 1829 in Elbert County , GA. Sarah was born Dec., 1811 in Virginia and died after 1900. Jesse #2 and Sarah had nine children: Martha Ann (b. 9/17/1833 in Elbert County , GA. ); Lucinda A. (b. 1834 in Elbert County ); Francis A (b. 1836 in Elbert County. – known as Frank. Missing in action in CSA); James Josephus (b. 1838 in Elbert County – known as Jim – enlisted in Confederate Army Co. 1, 18th Georgia Infantry in 1865); George W. (b. 3/15/1839 in Elbert County – Served in CSA); Mary F. (b. 1/02/1846 in Cobb County, GA); Sarah Jane (b. 1848 in Cobb County, GA); Jesse Alphus (my great grandfather – b. 1853 in Cobb County, GA.) and William M. (b. Mar. 1856 in Cobb County, GA. – known as Bill – Married Sam Ella Morton.) Jesse Alphus married twice. His first wife (my great grandmother) was Mary Ann Henson. They married on 12/26/1873 in Cobb County, GA and had 10 children: Green Alexander (b. 6/21/1875; Mettie Tatum Paris (b. 10/08, 1877); Lucy Tatum Mostellar (b. 05/03/1880); Elizabeth Tatum Manning (known as Lizzie – b. 08/10/1883); Infant Tatum (b. 07/09/1889 – d. 07/27/1889); Jesse Henson (my grandfather – b. 06/23/1890); Clifford Leland Tatum (known as Jack – b. 08/23/1892); Horace Luther Tatum (b. 09/22/1895); Newton Warner Tatum (b. 3/10/1887 – d. 06/28/1889); Infant Tatum (b. 06//17/1897 – died same day). After Mary Ann Henson’s death, Jesse Alphus remarried. His second wife was Marietta Alvarilla Bates, known as Rilla. Together they had six children: Irvin (b. 04/16/1906); John B. (b. 07/29/1912); James A. (b. 05/20/1916); Mary F. Tatum Randall (b. 01/06/1908); Annie Mae Tatum (b. 05/06/1909); Tatum ( still living.) Jesse Alphus and both of his wives are buried in Old Big Creek Cemetery in Alpharetta , GA. This area was originally in Milton County , but is now in Fulton County . Jesse Henson Tatum (my grandfather) married Annie Mae Queen Kinard in January of 1921 in Atlanta , GA. Both were killed in an explosion at their Atlanta home in January of 1936 and are buried in Greenwood Cemetery , Atlanta , Ga. Together they had two sons: Charles Mason Tatum (b. 07/08, 1921 – d. 05/21/2005); Tatum ( still living ). ELBERT COUNTY, GEORGIA MARRIAGES 1829-1831 Tatum, Jesse and Rowsau Sarah Apr. 9, 1829 219 http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gaelber2/Marriages1829.html From: Pat Miller <patmill60@@bellsouth.net> Date: Sun, Nov 10, 2013 at 6:30 AM Subject: Tatums in Georgia To: Andrew Jarrett <andrew.lee.jarrett@@gmail.com> Hi, Andrew, I looked at your Geni tree this morning and found some things that I know to be wrong under George W. Tatum. Mettie Paris was not his daughter. Her father was George's younger brother Jesse Alphus Tatum. Nancy Coleman was also not his daughter. She was the daughter of George W's sister Mary Frances ("Fannie") Tatum Coleman and her husband Hosea Coleman. I've never come across Becky Tatum. I'd be interested to know where you found her, so I can add her to my tree. I see that you've cited the Roosevelt Tatum book. Roosevelt made the assumption that the descendants of Jesse and Sarah Tatum were related to the descendants of Hugh, but he couldn't figure out how. There is a possibility that the two branches of the Tatum family are related but I've been trying for years to find proof. We've even DNA tested direct descendants of both Jesse and Hugh. Their DNA does not match. This of course does not mean that they are not related. One or the other of them could have been adopted or illegitimate or the first common ancestor is one or more generations back from Jesse and Hugh. Jesse's DNA does not match any other known Tatum line. He has Allen DNA and closely matches a number of descendants of a man named George Allen. In the several years since my father Robley Henson Tatum was tested, no other Tatum/Allen hybrids have been added to the Tatum DNA project who could not be easily traced back to Jesse and Sarah. The longer this goes on the more convinced I've become that our Jesse is probably the first Tatum to have Allen DNA. There was an older Jesse Tatum who lived in Elbert County at the same time our Jesse and Sarah did. According to census records, which at the time only contained first names of the head of household, this Jesse had a male in his household in the right age group to be our Jesse, but we've never been able to find any evidence that the two were indeed father and son (or more likely grandfather and grandson.) We did find that the older Jesse (whom we call Rev. Jesse, because he fought in the Revolutionary War), lived on land that belonged to his neighbor William Allen. William was a prominent citizen in Elbert County. I've speculated that perhaps William, who was married, had an affair with one of Rev. Jesse's daughters and that our Jesse was actually William's child. He might have been raised as a Tatum to protect William from scandal, and in exchange for their silence Rev. Jesse and his family were allowed to live on William's land. All this is pure speculation on my part. Perhaps we'll find out if one day someone who can trace directly back to William takes the DNA test and closely matches our Jesse. If that ever happens I'll let you know. {geni:marriage_order} 1
