"A time capsule buried in 1891 lets Winchester relive its past"
There was no gold inside a time capsule unearthed recently at the former site of Kentucky Wesleyan College's Administration Building, but there was historical treasure. A crowd of about 120 gathered Friday for the opening of the box, found earlier in the week. Young and old strained to see what Winchester residents had placed in the capsule in 1891. County Judge-Executive J. B. Allen was as surprised as anyone when onlookers, rummaging through the capsule, discovered a memento from his grandfather, J. K. Allen. J. K. Allen, a winchester tinsmith and hardware store owner, had sealed the box for the college. On a sheet bearing the Allen Company's letterhead was written: "This with the best wishes for the College and a happy thought for who ever may look upon this sheet in the days when it may be opened after many years of concealment." It was signed by J. K. Allen's partner, D. L. Cook. "I don't remember my grandfather too well," Allen said later. "I was only 3 when he died." "But this is something," he said holding the well-preserved note. "I'll have to have a copy of this."
