a. Note:   Joseph and Lucy moved west to the outskirts of Chicago and Then to Bainbridge, Kalamazoo Co., MI. In October of 1845, they Returned to Brookfield, Tioga Co., PA. They bought a farm north of Westfield, PA., On the California road. Joseph was an avid reader, making himself a well informed man. He was strongly opposed to slavery and he named his youngest son, David (Wilmot) after a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, whose Famous Wilmost Proviso would have prohibited slavery in all of the territories won from Mexico at the close of the war.
