Note: "Like the majority of English Families of renown, the Churchills trace their lineage to the followers of the Norman COnquest, and in France their ancestral line goes to a much more remote period. During the 11th Century, Wandril de Leon, a scoin of a noble family and son of Giles de Leon, became Lord of Coureil (now Courcelles) in the Province of Lorraine. He adoped Corcil as his family name; married Isabell de Tuya and had two sons, Roger and Rouland. Roger de Coureil accompanied William, Duke of Normandy, to England; participating in the conquest, and for his services was granted lands in Dorset, Somerset, Wilts, and Shropshire. He married Gertrude, daughter of Sire Guy de Toray, and had three sons; John, Hugh Fitz-Roger, and Roger Fitz-Roger. John de Coureil, son of Roger and Gertrude de Coureil, married John de Kilrington and their son Bartholomew was knighted during the reign of King Stephen (1135-1154) as Sir Bartholomew de Chercile. " "William Churchill, the 7th in line of decent from Roger de Coureil of France, was the first to adopt this form of spelling the name. These gleanings will serve as a brief summary of the early history of the Churchill's in England. (1) John, emigrant ancestor the the well known American novelist, Winston Churchill (not to be confused with Sir WInston Churchill) settled at Plymouth 1643, died 1662, married Hannah Pontus. John was the son of Jasper Churchill of London, England, 1628. and Jasper was the 18th in descent from Gitto de Leon 1055."
