He graduated from the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia in 1941, and attended the U niversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in 1949. He was a member of the Delt a Psi (St. Anthony Hall) fraternity. David served in the Second World War from 1942 to 1947 and saw action in the European Theatre where he received the Eisenhower Presidential Citation.
