a. Note:   He was an engineer on the Central of Georgia Railroad. In Germany, his name was Karl, but when he came to the states, he used Charlie. He was 17 when he came to the states, which would put it about 1874. His second wife was also named Lula. The family called her Miss Lula. She is buried beside him in Cedartown. Nobody liked her and their marriage was not a happy one. The children, mainly the girls, were mistreated by her and stayed a good bit of the time with "Papa" and "Mama" Surls. We have a copy of his birth certificate, and a picture of him and Lula Virginia. He supposedly entered the states through New York, but may have been through Savannah, Ga. He didn't speak English very well and had trouble with his money, so Papa Surls wrote all his checks for him. He liked to wear white suits and Panama Hats.
