Notes
a. Note:   Samuel P. Beers was the son of Sturges Perry Beers and Lucy Flowers. He was born on February 16, 1840 in Cheshire, Berkshire Co., MA. This information was received by his grandson Homer Beers James. He has been found in the 1850 census for Cheshire and is living with his parents. He is 10 years old and was born in MA. In 1860 he is still living at home in Cheshire with his parents. He is working as a farm laborer and is 20 years old. From his civil war pension file, we learn that Samuel enlisted in Co. B, 37th Regiment, Mass. Infantry on August 12, 1862 and was honorably discharged on June 21st, 1865. Samuel married Louise Adeline Blood on April 16, 1867 in Hoosick Corner, New York. He gives his age as 26 and states that he was born in Cheshire, MA. and is a laborer. In 1870 the family is living in Cheshire. Samuel is now 29 and is working as a teamster. He has $600 in personal property. In 1880 he is working as a laborer and is now 40 years old. The 1900 census states Louisa is a widow. It was only when the pension file was checked for Samuel Beers that we learned he, in fact, did not die before 1900, but had moved to California sometime between 1880 and 1888. He had divorced Louise on December 26, 1888 by decree of the Superior Court of San Bernadino County, California. On December 28, 1888 he married Harriet Marie Blood, a sister of his first wife, in Los Angeles, California. Samuel died on April 27, 1901 leaving a wife and 3 young children. From information received from Homer Beers James, a grandson of Samuel, Harriet did not have an easy life after his death. She passed away on March 11, 1939 in Long Beach, California after suffering a stroke which left her deaf, blind and mute.
