a. Note:   James Foster in 1850 Jefferson Co. census lists his place of birth as PENN. This is what I strongly feel is correct. James was only 49 years old here, and certainly wasn't senile yet and knows the state he was born in.
  Carpentry shop was located on Market St/between Church St & 7th, Steubenville, Oh.
  HISTORY OF JEFFERSON COUNTY & REPRESENTATIVE CITIZENS-p.182-183 Silver Greys of 1863 On July 1, 1863 a company of Steubenville's older citizens who were not liable to draft organized under the following agreement: "Owing to the deplorable situation of our country and the good reasons we have to fear a rebel raid into our state we the under- signed, being men not subject to the draft or to be compelled to perform military duty, but at the same time believing it to be our duty to organize for the defense of ourselves, our families and our property, hereby agree to form ourselves into a military home guard company, to be called the Silver Greys. Among the signees: James Foster, and J.D. Filson.
b. Note:   James Foster owned a carpentry shop in Steubenville, Oh. located on Market, between Church & Seventh streets.
c. Note:   STEUBENVILLE WEEKLY GAZETTE-13 MAR 1874 Foster-At his residence, 625 Market street, on Friday evening, March 6th, at 9 o'clock, James Foster, (Father of James P.Foster, late assistant Auditor, St. Louis and Indianapolis Railway.) in his 73d year.
