Note: I have a petition signed by community members acquainted with James stating the following: "This is to certify that we the undersigned, are personally acquainted with James M. Matthews of Pana Illinois, both before and after he entered the service of the World War, and do know that at the time of his discharge he was in poor health and has been continuously since that time, and is now in a very much disabled condition physically." This petition was on letterhead of the Department of Health, City of Pana and was dated June 20, 1924. I also have a bill from The Little Sanitarium of Pana, Illinois dated August 29, 1924. This shows that James entered February 18, 1924 and was discharged on March 12, 1924. The total bill for room, diet, nurse, and treatment was $89.
