Notes
a. Note:   The following are the notes of Esther Cochran Matthews: "William Matthews' family came from Ireland sometime before the War of Independence (1763-1783, in which his father fought). William was a religious man who didn't believe in fighting and paid twice to be immune from service (it was called subscription). After paying twice, they were going to make him serve in the Civil War (1849-1865). The night before he was to leave he hung himself in the barn. Their last child was born three months later. In 1986, James H. Matthews has a wooden chest that was made in 1827 by William Sr."
On January 23, 1860, William bought forty acres of reclaimed swamp land for $256 in Shelby Co., Illinois described as follows: "The southwest quarter of the southeast quarter of Section five in Township nine south of Range two east of the Third Principal Meridian." This was filed on January 18, 1865 in Shelby Co., Illinois No. 398.
1870 Illinois Mortality Record: Wm. John Mathews committed suicide by hanging himself (in family barn) 1/2 m. E. of Herrick.
The following are notes of Mary Fouts: "John and his family lived near Ham Miller Mill on Beck Creek. He also suffered from stomach problems."
