Note: Helen never asked for, nor received any special treatment for a condition which many might consider a handicap. She contacted infantile paralysis as a teenager and as a result the usage of one hand and foot were severely affected. As a young woman and an adult she worked and held her own within her family and the outside world. She retired from a job doing piece work for Orr Felt Company in Piqua, OH after many years of service. Although she never had children, she was a second mother to many of her nephews and nieces. Even into her later life she could be counted on to bake pies and cakes for charity bazaars at church. She produced beautifully embroidered quilt blocks for the quilts she and her sister "Stina" made in their later life. In her late 70's and early 80's she still wielded a wicked embroidery needle--she always referred to the beautiful scenes she produced as "plain embroidery", but the work was good enough to compare favorably with many of the beautiful old works which now adorn European churches.
