Notes
a. Note:   Bernard "Emil" Garmann dropped the 2nd N from his name sometime after coming to the United States. It is interesting to note that his oldest daughter, Francis Garman Vagedes' first communion certificate still retained the double N spelling. Emil's great-great grandfather, was believed to have been named Peter Gardemann , the family tradition of the changed spelling of the surname was reinforced by the church register which recorded the 1829 baptism of an uncle, and lists the child's father as Garmann s Gardemann.
Emil came to the United States with his younger brother Clemens. They came via sailing ship to New York and made their way to West Virginia. It is likely they traveled the Ohio river to Cincinnati and then to Mercer County.Emil worked as a farm hand on the Mescher farm.He married Anna Heitmann but after her death he married Mary Mescher a sister of his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Mescher Garman, Clemen's wife.
Emil and Mary eventually had a farm of their own and a nice farm home.Emil suffered from diabetes and eventually lost a leg to this disease.A family story says that when Emil's leg was amputated he begged Mary to save it to bury with him, since he hoped to be made whole again in heaven.Somehow the leg was preserved in formaldehyde, and in compliance with his wishes buried with him in St. John's cemetery in Maria Stien.
