Note: William Stewart was a volunteer indian spy and captain of scouting under General Wayne in the states of Virginia and Kentucky from 1782 for the protection of Kentucky and Virginia. He served in Brooks and Ohio counties, the scene of indian raids where he was associated with Samuel Brady, the Wartses and McCulloughs and others. During the continuance of said services, his contact was such as to win the confidence and good will of General Wayne, who promoted him to Captain of the scouts. His personal friendship with General Wayne continued up to 1794, He emigrated to Kentucky in 1790, and was married on May 19, 1796 to Malinda Price who was born in Maryland, perhaps, Baltimore. She died at Bank Lick Creek in Kenton County KY Jan 15, 1847. In the spring of 1848, he gave everything he had to his children to advance their interest in life and followed them to Iowa expecting to live with them. When he got there, he first stopped with his daughter Zarina, the wife of Dr. Nathan Shepherd near Bentonsport. He was gladly received and made very welcome by all. This Zerina Shephard's walk in life as a Christian and phalenthropist was that of her father and these qualities being so happily blended in her nature seemed to attract her father to cntinue his home with her until his death.
