a. Note:   Katherina Kasl were also born in Bohemia. Wesley brought his familyto the United States about 1857 and settled in Tama County, Iowa. In1871, they moved to Jefferson Township, Republic County, KS andhomesteaded the NE quarter of Section 8. The property is on U.S.Highway 36, about 4 miles from Belleville, Kansas.
  It is said that Wesley and Katherina Kasl came to the United States toavoid oppression in Bohemia. The country was being ruled by Austrianrulers and all available boys were being taken from their families tobe trained for the Austrian Army.
  Although the obituary indicates that Wesley Vincel Kasl (also known asCharlie, Vaclav and Vincel) had no brothers or sisters, it would seemotherwise from the data found census records and from relatives.
  According to a grand-daughter of Wesley Kasl's, when this coupleretired, they lived in a small house in the NW corner of thehomestead, and their sons (probably Peter and then Mike) farmed theland. The property eventually sold, but the old dug house is now inthe pasture and is covered with flowers, is still in evidence.
  Wesley and Katherina were apparently rather small in stature. Theonly known photograph of them is an enlarged, heavily framed picturethat is in the possession of a granddaughter of Mike Kasl's.
