Ed delivered Western Union telegrams at a young age; his boss asked him if he would like to go to school in Chicago to learn to be a telegrapher. Ed was enthused. He had to work for room and board - where ever - however. He returned to Rock Island or Moline, Illinois, and worked in Davenport Iowa at Western Union. Eventually he was chief telegrapher over a crew there. He married Vera Gustafson in Moline. They both worked and saved and bought furniture and a car. They were estatic when Kathleen came along. Vera came home from the hospital but never felt well for a couple of weeks (or less). Doctor returned Vera and Kathleen to the hospital. Vera came down with small pox and the whole hospital was quarantined. Vera died, and Ed had a very difficult time. His sister Jean took Kathleen back to Chicago. They used to carry her around on a pillow! They were over indulgent - they loved her very much. Kathleen grew up nervous, lacked self-confidence but was sweet and caring. As a widower, Ed met Betty about a year after Vera's passing, and later married her. Ed kept doing better financially: he fixed radios in his extra time, then later opened a store in Rock Island: sold radios, then all kinds of equipment as a Philco dealer. Was largest in area. They opened stores in Moline and Davenport, and traveled all over to Philco conventions. Betty was a very likeable person, kind and helpful, who expected you to "do your part." this info. from Olline Schmiers 4-16-1997[Brderbund Family Archive #110, Vol. 2, Ed. 4, Social Security Death Index: U.S., Social Security Death Index, Surnames from M through Z, Date of Import: Apr 18, 1997, Internal Ref. #1.112.4.67023.30]
