Continued: Samuel Bailey graduated from Woodward High School. He rented a teamand wagon from his father, and did hauling. He entered the employ ofCincinnati Transfer Co. as a clerk in 1860 at age 21. He continued inmore and more responsible capacities until he became President. Thisconcern also operated the Cincinnati Railroad Omnibus Line. He tookover and became President of the American Laundry Co.. He was one ofa group which organized the Lincoln Club, of which he was a lifemember, repeatedly a director, and President in 1887-1888. In 1870 hejoined the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce, becoming and continuing asone of its Real Estate Managers. A staunch Republican, he enteredpolitics in the spring of 1878 by becoming a candidate from the FifthWard (strongly Democratic) for the Board of Education, was elected,and succeeded himself in the spring of 1880. In the fall of 1880 hewas elected Sherif of Hamilton County, and served two years. He hadbecome a member of Republican Cy-Exec-Com, and continued with it byserving on the Finance Committe, "the confidence of the community inhis scrupulous integrity lending ease to the raising of fundsnecessary for the legitimate management of a Republican campaign." Hewas appointed Sub-Treasurer of the U.S. for the District of Cincinnatiin 1889, by Benjamin Harrison, when the latter became President of theU.S., and served four years. In 1911 he retired from business, andwith his family, moved to Pasadena California.
