Continued: Founder of Grasselli Chemical Company born January 31, 1810 inStrasburg Germany. He was a trained chemist, his father, Jean A.Grasselli, having been the first manufacturer to utilize Sicilianbrimstone in Europe in connection with the production of sulphuricacid at Mannheim Germany. Although assured of a career with isfather, at 27 Eugene emigrated to America in 1837. He obtained aposition with a then old chemical manufacturing concern, now Powers &Weightman, manufacturers of Pharmaceuticals. He left for Cincinnatiin 1839 because he was dissatisfied at lack of recognition of hisability. He established, by himself, the first chemical manufacturingplant west of the Allegheny mountains. He put in a branch inCleveland in 1867. He took interests in chemical plants at Orlean NewYork and Titusville Pennsylvania. He absorbed Marsh & Harwoodmanufacturing chemicals next door to the Cleveland branch which, dueto the consumption of sulphuric acid at oil refineries, had become themain plant. He died suddenly of heart failure at the family home, 201S Clair St in Cleveland, three years before these and other interestswere merged in 1885, into the Grasselli Co., an Ohio corporation. InDecember 1928, this concern was acquired by the E.I. du Pont deNemours Co of Delaware.
